Combine cells in a table
-
I have some large tables that I need to reduce in size on the page of my archive/blog: HERE
What is the html code for combining 2 cells in a column and 2 cells in a row? (I know a bit of html but nothing of css.)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @cigadam, you would actually use HTML for that as well, with colspan and rowspan. This may help:

I’ve looked at that html course, and tried several things, but no matter what I do, Nothing Happens, neither on Preview (narrow), the preview page (wide) nor the actual published page:
https://wordpress.com/page/chrisforestprotectionstearmans.wordpress.com/1027The table needs to be much wider to accomodate the large amount of text in two columns, and there are still no vertical lines. Can you take a close look at the html?
-
@cigadam your theme is older and has a pretty narrow content area. Have you thought about using something that offers more space?
All of these offer a template without sidebars:

Also I can see you aren’t using colspan. I’d suggest starting with a wider space though. Be sure to click on the demos and view what the full width page template looks like for each theme to see if it would have enough space for you.

Thanks for the great suggestions, supernovia :-), and thanks for looking at my table! I am going to try using a new theme, but I have no idea which one of the ~200 would be appropriate. Also, how do I demo them on my site without accepting the theme permanently? That’s the only option I see

Colinear is an update to Coraline, so you might like that one:
https://colineardemo.wordpress.comOr you might just try the no-sidebar template.
-
My page is now in Colinear, but I don’t see an option to edit the template to ensure the page is set to Full width. Also, there seems to be no option to set different widgets on different pages: it is all or nothing!
-
@cigadam sorry, to clarify you would have wanted to use the full page template in Coraline, OR switch to Colinear (it doesn’t offer a full page template, but the content width is a bit wider.)
You can hide widgets on pages with the Visibility button on each widget.
Anyway you might also try starting out your table with something like this:
<table border="2" rules="all" id="#thetable" style="table-layout:fixed;font-size:70%;"> <tbody> <tr> <th><b>Tail #</b></th> <th><b>Reg’n.</b></th> <th><b>Location</b></th> <th style="width:20%;"><b>Colour-logo</b></th> <th style="width:10%;"><b>Tail Style</b></th> <th><b>1953 Image</b></th> <th style="width:30%;"><b>Comments</b></th> </tr> -
We did some digging, and the widest theme we can find is this one:
https://ceraunodemo.wordpress.com/readability/It gets wider with wider screens.
Please consider though how your table will display on mobile, too. If possible, you might consider using a CSS upgrade (which comes with Premium) so you can customize table display for mobile, or maybe consider using an embedded spreadsheet.
I hope that helps!

Lastly, while I was trying to come up with ideas for you, I found this which may be of help:
