Combining an "Image" and a "Link" post
-
I would like to add an image to my linked posts on the landing page of my website. Essentially, I want to combine the two post options (image post / link post) where when they click on the image or headline it takes them to the appropriate link/website. Is this possible? Am I able to have both a headline and photo?
Please see the test post I have up (“Curry Cured”) as an example. When you click on the text, it takes you to Yahoo Sports. The only thing I want to do differently is have an image (of my choosing) placed above the text “Curry Cured.” Thank you!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you tried setting a featured image for that post? The link posts on the main page do not display content. Give that a try and see how that works.
I have another idea if that doesn’t, but try that first.

Yes, I’ve tried that before. If you take a look at my website again, you will see another example. This one is using a featured image. For some reason, it redirects back to site. I did nothing different, as far as linking goes, besides adding a featured image. It also removes the headline “Curry Cured.”

Yes, the featured image would link to the actual post, I was just thinking on how to get an image to show on link post types, but see that the link doesn’t show up when you set a featured image.
Link post types do not include an “entry content” div, on the main page, so there really isn’t a way to add an image, unless you wish to add it via CSS for each and every link post type.
Let me work on some options and hopefully I can get some sort of workable solution for you.

I’m fascinated with the http://www.drudgereport.com concept. I’m wanting to take my blog in the direction of sports instead of politics. But he uses one eye-catching image at the top of the page that links to an article, all the rest below are just text. If I can find a way to get an image to stay at the top of my page with text below (something like this: ), I think I would be good. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks for all of your help, sir.

Just to clear up any confusion… the image at the top with “Curry Cured” below it in red, in the example given above, would be used as sort of the headline link. I’d then like to use the current theme set up for link posts (black text that redirects to another website – like current format on homepage) and run those below the main image. Hope that helps.

You know, I would suggest trying the standard format for the post and include the image as a featured image, and then include the link in the content area. The image would still link to the post itself though. Alternately, you could include the image in the content area, instead of using it as a featured post and you could like the image, and the text to whatever you wanted. The post title can be hidden with CSS, but if you are going to have a lot of these such links, it could get cumbersome adding to the CSS all the time.
I’m not sure how to make this happen since to change the function of the image format, or add an additional post format would require access to, and editing of the theme PHP script files, and we cannot do that at WordPress.com.

Bleh. I may just need to switch over to WP.org it looks like. This theme, which I paid good money for, does not seem to have the functionality that I was hoping for. A real pain.

Sorry I don’t have a rabbit to pull out of my hat on this for you. I’m not positive on this, but in general I think on “link” post types, all themes will follow the same basic format, so this will require a child theme and then writing some PHP to add an image to the Link post types. The post type is meant for simply sharing a link.
It is certainly possible on a WordPress.org install to do this though. Just requires a bit of php knowledge.

A question for you: are you going to be using a lot of “link” post types, or will it be something kind of rare? The reason I ask is that we could possibly add an image with CSS and style things to your liking. Where this get cumbersome is if you will have a lot of these each will require some unique CSS.

Do you have a more private form of communication, sir? I’d like to run a few ideas by you with this new theme I’m using on WP.com. I don’t want to drag out this post any further. No worries if you’d rather not share. You can close the post. Can’t seem to find out how to private message on here…

Hi there, not worries on continuing here. It well could be that this discussion will help people in the future.
