Combining two websites

Hello! I am currently designing a website for an organization and am working on a free version of wordpress to just get a general layout and theme established. The organization already has a paid wordpress site but it was an old version that needs to be updated (and the PHP needs to be updated too). However, I don’t have the hosting information to update the PHP so I was wondering if there is a way to transfer over the old subscription information to the new site I’ve been designing. Any ideas? Or is it better to just cancel the old subscription and start with a new? Thank you!

  • Hi there,

I’m not sure I follow what you’re trying to do.

You’re posting in the support forums for the hosting provider, WordPress.com. We’re not the same thing as the open source WordPress software, and it sounds like that’s what you’re using. That software is made and supported by the community on WordPress.org.

If you can tell me the URLs of the sites in question and what exactly you’re trying to transfer I might be able to point you in the right direction, but in this forum we’re only able to help with sites that are hosted on our servers.

Ah my apologies if this is the wrong place to post – I tried to follow the links for where to ask this question and this is where I was led… nevertheless here are the the two websites: http://www.faithfulfeworg.wordpress.com (the free version I created) and then the other website that has been purchased but nothing is created on it yet (old version) http://044d2d0.netsolhost.com/wordpress1/

I would like to just transfer the paid account information to the website I created… if that makes sense…

  • Hi there – Thanks for those two links!

So it sounds like the organization purchased hosting with another company some time ago and that site is using an older version of WordPress. That’s the site here: http://044d2d0.netsolhost.com/wordpress1/

That site is hosted with a different company, which means there’s not a way to transfer the paid account information over to what you have created here on WordPress.com.

Are there certain features or abilities on the organization site that you need on your site here at WordPress.com? That’s this site: https://faithfulfeworg.wordpress.com/

If there are, what are those features or abilities you need?

Thank you! This makes sense. I was thinking it would be smoother to just switch over the paid account to the free one so I can get more layout/design options. Do you suggest just closing the old account and reconfiguring over to the new?

For advice on the best process to follow here I’d suggest asking the WordPress.org community at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ instead. They provide support for the open source version of WordPress you’re using on
http://044d2d0.netsolhost.com/wordpress1/, so are best able to recommend what will work. Your hosting provider for that site might also offer a staging site setup which can be used for software updates like this, so try contacting their support as well.

If you prefer to move that site to the new one you created with us on WordPress.com, https://faithfulfeworg.wordpress.com/, you can migrate the content using a standard WordPress export.

    https://wordpress.com/support/import/#importing-content-from-another-word-press-blog

You can get an export file by logging into WP-Admin on the old site, and going to Tools ->Export.

That will only transfer the content, i.e. posts and pages, and not stuff like the theme, plugins, etc.
