Coming back to WordPress and having issues with layout/colors acclimating

  • Unknown's avatar

Before I closed my WordPress up, I made the dumb mistake of redirecting my links to a new CLOSED homepage so people couldn’t search as easily. I did this because 1) people started stealing my stuff 2) I worked too hard compiling it all online & feared deleting it all after that much work.

Now, coming back several years later, the colors on my page are wrong. The background is a dark red instead of black. I can’t get accustomed to the new ways of editing it back to the way it is supposed to be, or just general updating (I’m willing to change to make the site easier to navigate). And, I can’t figure out how to get my links in my menu to go to the right page(s).

I let my Premium account fall back to regular due to financial restraints and some Russian site bought my domain name. It’s really upsetting. I guess I need to change my name if I want to go Premium again because I doubt I could afford to buy my domain back from the Russians.

I was told my old site was hard to navigate so I am open to a simpler design. I still want to keep my color scheme that’s teal and black, but incorporate gray, silver or white to make it sleeker. I want to make my menu simpler to navigate, but still have my sidebar for social media available (social media I am planning on getting back into).

Is this all too much for the community to help me with?

The ideal situation is someone who knows this format and can sit next to me (virtually or not) and we can brainstorm together to iron out the plan.

I actually have a degree in comp. programming from NYU’s Courant Center of Mathematics. Graduated with a degree in that and History, with Honors. It’s hard to believe, considering what I’m asking. Unfortunately, I got Multiple Sclerosis and since then my brain hasn’t been doing well. It’s becoming harder for me to organize my thoughts over the past 3 years. I have memory issues and learning new things- it’s like I’m a senior citizen. I made my first website from scratch at 9 years old, and now at 27 it all seems so foreign. I can’t even writer poetry anymore, which is what I used to heal from childhood trauma. I only painted 1 painting in 2 years! And it’s bad. I am very embarrassed. I’m asking so much and I don’t know what I can give in return. If I could give the community anything back, please ask.

    Should I give up?
I just don’t want to delete all the pages (hundreds) I’ve posted. It’s my art from when I was still able to create art (I lost that ability from a lesion(s) that caused some more severe brain damage. It’s very rare, but happens. MS can really change your life in different, unusual ways. Nobody’s MS is the same so don’t get worried if you too have MS and are a creative person. You will probably be fine. I’m simply unlucky).

Please let me know if any of you can help. I feel like I need a personal one-on-one guide to go step-by-step to rebuild my site, which I know is impossible. A share-screen is my dream. But, everyone is busy. Any help is much appreciated.

    In sum:
    1. Change layout to make it easier to read & navigate
    2. customize it to my color and theme
    3. keep sidebar for social media
    4. keep image header for my signature look
    5. fix all my links to send to the right place
    6. Go premium by purchasing back http://www.artofdrem.com or creating new premium name*
    7. I think that’s it. Thanks!

*the issue is I am a published writer and though I go by several pen names profressionally, Drem is primary for this type of -personal- work. I don’t know what ‘Drem’ .com version I can use. My creativity died.

    Sincerely,
    Drem

I don’t think you’re losing your faculties as you lost me before I’d finished reading your first paragraph. Perhaps a different theme would be easier to navigate. Maybe you like the current one with video in the header though. The newest theme looks interesting: https://wordpress.com/theme/twentynineteen
You don’t have to use the new or even the brand new editors. The Classic editor is still hidden in there somewhere. When loading your site the red background appears then disappears after a second to be replaced by black (not that I like white text on black backgrounds…gives me a migraine). Of course the Premium plan would give you access to CSS if you like tinkering with things.
