Comment appeared without moderation request

  Hi —
  Over the past few weeks, when people commented on my site or my blog posts, I received requests to moderate (approve) each comment. Tonight a comment appeared with a notification to me, but no request that I approve it. The comment was fine — but why wasn’t I given the usual “approve” option that I’ve received all previous times? I didn’t change any settings that I know of. Thanks.

  Hi Rhea,

  It looks like in your Discussion Settings (in your Dashboard go to Settings >> Discussion), you have the option checked that only requires a comment be held in moderation if the commenter has never been approved before. If they have had a comment approved previously, then subsequent comments get approved automatically.

  You can change this option if you want (and many folks do tend to, even though it can mean more work). If you don’t you just need to be careful because if you approve even one spam comment, it can allow a virtual torrent of them through!
