Comment Approval, Etc. on My Blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I’m contacting you because I have opted that comments can be made on my blog http://yolandamichellemartin.org/ without my having to individually approve them. I’m still having to approve comments, however, many of which are spammed, although they are not or do not appear to be spam. I have also noticed that Akismet has blocked over 60,000 “spam” comments on my blog, though my blog stats are only showing 3,000+ hits http://yolandamichellemartin.org/about/, noting that that figure is not inclusive of nearly 7,000 additional comments that are awaiting approval.
I’m concerned that my Adwords application has not been approved yet, particularly in light of significant blocked traffic and other comments that are coming in to my blog as spam and otherwise that I have to manually approve, which has become overwhelming at this point in light of the substantial increase in traffic to my site (several hundred comments daily, and many other visitors, likely, who are not leaving comments). There are a considerable number of repeated comments; I’m assuming that this is due to the fact that the comments are not appearing once submitted by readers, and their submitting the same comments multiple times is, in their minds, the resolution (and maybe some of them have Alzheimer’s ). I’m also wondering if it is possible to block certain annoying individuals from commenting on my blog?
Many of the comments that I’m being asked to approve were never spammed, and frequently comments that are identifiably spam are being automatically approved. Can you fix whatever is causing this?
I’m also concerned with comments being made to my pages (“A Message from Yolanda,” “About Yolanda Martin/This Site,” “Briefings,” “Business Tools,” “Contact Us,” “Donate,” and “Resources”) instead of just on posts. How can I allow open comments or comments that would not require my approval on posts without allowing comments on these pages?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Yolanda,

Please note that your Spam folder is emptied out every 30 days, so that is why it may say over 60,00 spam comments, while you only have over 3,000 in the actual Spam folder.

If you have questions regarding spam, please contact our Akismet team directly here:

    Contact Us

They would be able to help you there.

There are a considerable number of repeated comments; I’m assuming that this is due to the fact that the comments are not appearing once submitted by readers, and their submitting the same comments multiple times is, in their minds, the resolution (and maybe some of them have Alzheimer’s ). I’m almost positive that these are all spam comments and not legitimate. It looks like those comments are in the pending queue because they were spam, but you unmarked them as Spam. I’ve read through them, and it looks like they are all spam.

As for the Adwords application, it wouldn’t be affected by this, and traffic is not being blocked because of spam comments as your site is public. You can take a look at your site stats here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/

That will give you a good idea of the number of views and visitors you are getting daily.

    Cheers!

The comments here https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6emvYiZbv5oZnlKNFFCUEJvYW8/edit?usp=sharing and thousands of others that were and are being spammed are not spam. I have also noticed that when I un-spam and approve comments that are not spam my “hits” are not increasing as I observed they previously were when I did this. So apparently those particular comments are blocked when they shouldn’t be. I have also noticed that my “hits” have not changed at all since you replied to my query, and though I actually deleted a couple of spam comments that were automatically approved and in no way synonymous with the posts that they were responsive to. Why is this???

    Hi Yolanda,

I see that you unspammed comments like this:

I’m extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout
on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself?
Either way keep up the excellent quality writing,
it’s rare to see a great blog like this one nowadays.

Please note that comment is very vague and doesn’t have anything to do with your actual post content. I know it may not seem like it, but this is spam. As seen the comment author is: michael kors blue glitter large satchels. This is not an actual name. This is one of the first signs of spam.

Because a lot of your spam comments were unspammed, there’s a lot of spam in your inbox. Please contact our Akismet team as I mentioned above. They will be better able to help you with this.

    Thank you.

That particular comment is not among those in the screen shot that I reference/provided the above link to, though I’ll definitely be deleting all “michael kors” comments from my blog.

One of the comments in that screen shot is from “Ava,” who asks, “Do you mind if I quote a couple of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your webpage? My blog site is in the very same niche as yours and my visitors would definitely benefit from a lot of the information you present here. Please let me know if this is alright with you. Cheers!” You can enlarge that comment by clicking on the plus sign in the top right corner of the page after opening the link.

MANY of the “spam” comments on my blog are from people asking me questions like that one, or asking me if I would be interested in guest blogging or if I would consider allowing them to guest blog on my site and/or if I would be interested in exchanging links with them.

Though one of the other comments in that screen shot is from http://www.sunscrapebermuda.com, they are informing me that they saved my blog as a favorite (which is verifiable), or verbatim: “Saved as a favorite. I love your blog!”

And though the last comment in that screenshot is from “skincare product reviews,” they reference the name of my article and my name in their comment: “Thanks for finally talking about > Why All Colleges Should Offer a Remote/Online Option for All Courses| Yolanda Michelle Martin <Liked it!”

I’ll also add that several of the comments that have been automatically approved by WordPress on my blog are from sources that do not provide “actual names.”

    Hi Yolanda,

I’m sorry, but I’m almost positive that all the comments you mentioned above are all spam. Even the one with the title of your post is spam.

A couple ways you can tell is when they say the “same niche” but yet not actually talking about the content in your post.

As for saving as a favorite – I went to that blog you mentioned and there is no site as seen here:

    http://www.sunscrapebermuda.com

    As for this one:

“Thanks for finally talking about > Why All Colleges Should Offer a Remote/Online Option for All Courses| Yolanda Michelle Martin <Liked it!”

Some spammers are a bit more sophisticated in that they can get the title of the post. The reason I believe it is spam is that the comment is so vague.

Please talk to our Akismet team as they work with this kind of spam daily. They’d be able to give you a better idea of why this is spam.

    Thank you!
