Comment blacklist on my discussion settings page
-
When i put in the http addresses of the website addresses i’d like to block do i just put a comma and one space between the addresses, or is that not the correct or best way to do it? And how come comments by the same http addresses keep coming again and again even though blocked by me. Also where will i find your reply on my WordPress blog? I give you my permission to use this accounts email address to answer these questions as i would prefer it in this instance, just in case i can’t find your reply, Thanks. But i see its a public forum so perhaps i’ll not be speaking to a WordPress member of staff, although i’d like one employee to answer this if they can.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

hi,
I have tagged modlook for a Staff to help you with this.
Thank you for your patience while they get back to you. -
Hi there,
It would be more effective to block someone via the username and email address they’re using, as a website linked to the username is not compulsory, and can be changed very easily. To block someone via their site address you’d also need to enter every variation – with or without http, https, www, etc. Rather stick with username and email.
As the instructions in your site’s Discussion Settings indicate, please add each username, email address or word you want to blacklist on its own line. Separating them by commas won’t work, as the comma will just be interpreted by our system as being part of the term you’re trying to block.

Hello Kokkieh.
That was very helpful, i will do as much of what you told me as i can. The main problem is i have a persistent spammer or spammers possibly working as a group, i don’t know. I haven’t clicked-on or opened their links or websites because i just can tell these are not ‘real’ or ‘serious’ comments.
Also, they use [at the moment] anyway three main http or http addresses and the spam that does come in which thankfully is getting less, but at one time has been hundreds in total comes from lots of different user names and email addresses so i feel to put all those on the blacklist would be just too much hard work.
But i will put their http’s on single lines without comma’s and see if anything improves for me.
If the problem ever gets really bad again, i dare say i can write to WordPress support again, but i’m hoping it’ll not come to that.
You’ve been a great help today, and i’ve no more to say.
Thank you. Robert.

Hi Robert, are these comments actually spam (unwanted advertisements?) Usually our system can learn to catch those automatically. If it isn’t, can you leave a few in pending status so we can look, then update us here when you’ve got a few collected?
If they are disagreeable comments rather than actual advertisements, you’ll want to use the blacklist.

Hi Supernovia.
I don’t know how to answer you in a way you’ll understand fully, but i’ll try.
They are definitely unwanted or asked for, they are not advertisements as such, i believe it is just a spammer or spammers who want me to reply or accept their comments so they can link to my blog, which i don’t want them to do.
As for leaving them in the pending status as you suggested so you could have a look, all i can say is they all come directly into my spam place, waiting to be either approved/unapproved and in this case unapproved and deleted by me.
So, i ask is there a way on my comments page i can move a comment from spam to pending status, so you can look at it.
As for using the blacklist, i will look into this, but they aren’t really disagreeable as such just unwanted.
Awaiting your reply.
Thanks.

So those are just links that are coming in? On what site is this?
That sounds like Pingbacks which, while they appear in the comments section on a post, are not comments, and not checked by our spam filters at all.
When someone on another WordPress website links to a post on your site, that generates a pingback – their site sends a notification to your site that they’ve linked to you, usually including the context of the link so it can be displayed as a comment. Pingbacks always go into pending status, and you can either approve or delete them.
Not approving the pingbacks won’t prevent the other sites from linking to yours. It will just prevent the link from displaying on your site.
If you don’t want to receive pingbacks when someone links to your site, you can disable it for all new posts you publish under My Site ->Settings ->Discussion, or you can also disable pingbacks on a per-post basis from the post editor.

Hello, i cannot tell you if they are just links as i don’t know or really understand how to describe them to you.
You ask which site is this? But first i need to ask is this a public forum? meaning is everyone reading these ‘our’ messages, because if it is, i would rather not say, but if it is private between just WordPress staff and me then i will tell you later. But to be clear, do you mean what is my WordPress blog’s name? or the name given by the spammers, which are three main http addresses.
I’ve taken in the rest of what you told me and will disable the pingbacks if i need to and see what happens, but does that mean no-one will ever ping my comments back and not just the spammers?
And i must read-up what ‘pingbacks’ are exactly on WordPress, because despite what you just told me, i’m a bit unsure just now, and if its the right thing for me to do, but i’ll get my head around it and decide the best course of action. Thanks.

What i forgot to say in my last comment a few minutes ago was they ‘the spammers’ comments usually arrive just a little while after any new posts are made by me on this blog i use the most. I hope that helps a little more to narrow things down.
I hope this didn’t arrive too late to be seen as another reply and not as it is… … the second part of what i just said today.

Part three of today’s comments:
Oh dear, what a fool i’ve been, i should’ve checked-out WordPress.com first before i posted my question, and at the age of 52 i should know that Forums are ‘open to all and for all to read’ so asking if this was a private discussion was the height of silliness.
If you’ve heard of King Cnut or Canute trying to hold the tide… [or in my case people reading my personal information] …back from his kingdom, then i guess like him i should’ve known better, but i do now.
You’ve got to laugh, well i did anyway.
And yes, the King’s name is spelt correctly Cnut!! He was Danish i believe.
So, ignore that part of my last comment WordPress staff please.

Hi, yeah these forums are public.
It does sound like you’re dealing with pingbacks, and disabling them will stop this issue for you. If you do need more help, let us know the name of your site, and leave some of those comments as pending. As staff we can take a look to see what is up.
