Comment cant be posted unless logged in with WP or social media id

Many of my blog visitors don’t use social media and I have always set Discussion settings to ask for email and name only; comments are then held until approved by me. This week visitors are being asked to log in with a WP or other social media profile. I have rechecked my settings on the dashboard, reset them and saved them several times but that’s not working. I use basic blog, simple off the peg theme and no plug ins or fancy stuff. Not a tecchy. Baffled.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This page > Settings > Discussion is where you set up defaults for comments.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

    Discussion Settings
    Other comment settings
_Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
_Users must be registered and logged in to comment

Note that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.

You can post instructions for your visitors in a text widget if you wish to set up anonymous commenting. That’s easy to do. You copy and paste this into a text widget:

Readers: Note that the email address and logging in prompts do appear for comments on this blog, but providing an email address and logging in are not required.

P.S. Do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.

Thank you Timethief: I am pretty sure I had all that covered. But to be sure, I’ve gone into Discussion Settings and reset to ‘comment author must fill out name and email’ because if the prompt is going to appaer anyway, they may as well do it. (Most of my visitors are non-tecchy 50+ villagers – my blog functions as the village’s online noticeboard.)
And I definitely have it set so that comments are held in moderation until I approve them.
But still not working for me or my visitors.
I’ve tried to leave a comment as a visitor (ie have logged out of WP and used a different email address) but no matter what email address I try, I see a message saying “You are being asked to login because [email address redacted] is used by an account you are not logged into now.”
I interpret this to mean it still wants me to log in before I can comment.
    Still baffled I’m afraid.

You are required to log into WordPress.com if the e-mail address you use in the comment form is associated with an existing WordPress.com account. If the e-mail address is not registered at WordPress.com you’ll be able to comment without the need to log in.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance!

Ah, thank you Kardotim. I never thought of that. I’ve done a test using a non-WP associated email address and that works.
