comment e-mail shows my IP address

Hi Sunburntkamel,
(where do you guys get these names? :)
Absolutely, I agree with you about the under age.
-
Hi myronhoward,
It’s not about my “feathers” as you put so delicately, I’m not that delicate! So know that I don’t get intimidated. I will definitely say what’s on my mind, especially when it’s important.
I don’t know where you got that Blogger provides IP info but that’s not true. I blog at Blogger and it does not give IP info.
I don’t know of the other name you’ve mentioned. I only use the big names – and those names haven’t provided any IP at all and must know better or more or something.
As well, Microsoft Windows Live Spaces blocks spam marvelously without giving my IP address way.
So I’m still confused as to why my IP addressed is needed here. If you ask me, you are all just too compliant, way too laid back. You don’t ask questions, it’s like you don’t care if you’re being manipulated. That’s crazy to me. Honestly.

Judyb12 my apologies :)
With a child molestor that’s exactly the entire problem… the more information you provide them the more apt they are to use it and push their need forth.
They don’t walk away like you or I. They want that information. Badly.
What I’m saying is… you dangle a carrot infront of the horses mouth what do you think happens…

Hours ago one of our Moderators, advised you this was a policy issue that you ought to take to staff, as they are the only ones that can deal with it.

I think this is one that you better just take up with the staff askkimberley because it really is a policy issue and they are the only ones that can deal with it. Nothing can be gained by talking about it here, just disagreements! I am sure they will get back to you as soon as they can.
TrentThe feedback button to use to contact staff with is on the top right hand corner of any of your blog pages. Alternatively, you can email support at this domain dot com. :)

Companies are made up of people. Companies having your IP is exactly the same as individuals having your IP.
If you don’t approve of people using IP tracking to track people, you should not indulge in it. And if you don’t want to be traceable, you shouldn’t leave traces, particularly personalized ones like an IP; signing out before commenting is a basic, simple step. If you won’t take that one step, you’re asking WordPress to intervene far too much in your online life. You’ve been pointed to anonymizers you refuse to use.
Several operational solutions have been presented, yet you refuse to take any of those courses of action and insist that the system you are using is broken because it doesn’t function in the way you desire. I’m not sure that this system will ever meet your requirements, so maybe you should research some blogging platforms that provide this kind of anonymizer as a built-in feature. If you find some, report back because I’m sure there will be people who are interested in that information.
-
With all due respect, the only solution is for you to turn off your computer and get off the internet. Every website does tracking in one way or another. Even if they say they don’t, the IP address is logged by the webserver.
I see your IP address here as a moderator. I use that information when someone is having a connection issue or something simular. That’s as far as it goes.

askkimberly, I stand corrected on Blogger providing IP info to blog owners. However, I recently imported my Blogspot blog to WP and guess what? WP retrieved the IP info for the Blogspot comments. And Haloscan is one of the biggies. It is a comment system used on many blogs. It was developed to do a better job of fighting spam comments than most of the native comment systems were doing.

I only had one question here:
Why does WordPress provide IP addresses to bloggers? What I find peculiar is it’s yet to be answered and even support won’t answer it and instead goes around it.
I can do a search on the internet on Google and ‘askkimberley’ will pull up a lot of the places I’ve let comments for example… but not one of those search strings has an IP address staring me blank in the face.
So, it’s not the world wide web providing it. It’s the software engineers, such as WordPress, such as Haloscan (which I know nothing about), etc.
So as you mentioned ‘myronhoward’, WordPress has taken initiative to supply you with the IP addresses of Blogger comments when you import. I seriously question this and I’m really flabberghasted no one here does.
If you want to know more about this, please inquire with leaders who are obviously looking into this responsibly. As well, you’re still not seeing or questioning the humanitarian side of it. Companies do what they do for “business.” They are not looking out for your best interests, they are looking out for what you ask for. How many of you are looking out for your best interests?
Humanitarians do not look for purpose of “business”… they look much deeper and inquire about everything for humans, and thank God they do for a lot of us are without insight. So if by chance you feel you are starting to hear bells, please investigate the following:
Reporters Without Borders: Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents: The handbook provides technical tips on how to blog anonymously (and avoid censorship).
Start with the Wikipedia link and it will take you to Reporters Without Borders and the Handbook > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reporters_Without_Borders
I find it very interesting.

askkimberley you have said:
I only had one question here:
Why does WordPress provide IP addresses to bloggers?Only staff can answer this. Please send in a feedback to staff. :)
-
As well, I have not “refused” to look into the suggestions here. I have not researched them yet.
Thank you.

Hi “Timethief”
I did, I think you missed the 2nd line where I said: What I find peculiar is it’s yet to be answered and even support won’t answer it and instead goes around it.
-
That’s because we don’t discuss policy here in the forums. In the past, it’s gotten rather nasty.
I sent in my own feedback for you and was told staff was aware of this discussion. It’s up to them if they want to comment. Feel free to send in your own email or feedback.
I just think you’re overblowing the “data from IP address” issue. Really all you can get is the general city location and the ISP used from an IP address. That’s it.
Perfect example: My current IP address is 152.15.103.38. Here’s the whois. What can you learn from that link?
-
askkimberley,
What TT is trying to tell you nicely is that you won’t get an answer about it here, because we don’t make WP policy decisions. Continuing to ask the question here is a fruitless endeavour.
It seems that WP may not be the best place for you, since you have problems with its policies and support.
You are free to explore other blogging options, as i am sure you are aware.
-
drmike,
People here are obviously unaware of my situation. Instead of getting into that, what I’m not happy with is that I was entirely unaware of the fact that when I started this account my IP address would be availble and could be linked back to my location. Nowhere in WordPress Terms of Service or the Privacy Policy does it warn me of this and I was not given any option. There is nothing clear or explicit detail.
-
-
FYI: drimike, I have discussed it with support by email/feedback form, not through the forums here. So I guess you misunderstand.
-
It’s not linked back to your location. That’s the point we’re trying to make.
I see you’re IP address. Using that, I can see your ISP. (For reference, it starts with an R)
That’s it. I can’t even pull up a city with it.
-
Thanks Judy, what you’re telling me is that I don’t have freedom of expression here!
Give me a break.
-
I have just been informed that 2 people have cancelled their accounts at WordPress because of this and 2 others who will not be blogging here. As you can see there are others who were unaware and are not comfortable with not being given the choice and not knowing period. I’m simply saying it comes across as very reckless.
