Comment email subscription: confirmation is noisome.
-
Hi, I just left a comment on a blog and checked email subscribe. Then I promptly received an email confirmation query for the transaction.
I see no place to turn the confirm off, not for my blog and not for my account.
IMO, this is a totally unnecessary level of security (from what?). It’s just a comment section, and presumably notifications will include the ability to unsub.
I deleted the confirm and therefore lost tracking of the comment I left. I think the confirm is an obstacle to wordpress.com user communication.

I’m speculating, but it might be the reason for the confirmation is due to those out there that might have less than admirable intent or that want to mess with your mind or play a joke on you.
If someone had your email address, and they had something against you, they could leave comments on other sites using your email address, and then click the “subscribe to comments” box and then you would get notification of those comments in YOUR email. If you clicked on the link to see the comments, it might be something that you are not interested in seeing.
I like the confirmation for the comment email subscription.

Certainly that is a reason for the notifications, and they could probably never be eliminated. Could there be a setting for individual accounts? Possibly.

Malicious third party intent is a valid reason for the confirmation, but the fact is that I left my comment on a wordpress.com blog while logged in as a wordpress.com user. In such a situation I would think that enough validation is already inherent to the process. They know it’s me; no third parties are involved.
I can see, however, that in the wild the confirm would be a good idea.

That is a good point about being signed into wordpress when making a comment. In that case I agree that the confirmation should not be required, or should at least be something that the blog owner can toggle off or on.
