Comment in a password protected post
-
Is there any possibilities for a reader to leave comment on my password protected post without entering (or even knowing) the password?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
This may be a silly question, but without the password, how would they be able to see the post they’re commenting on to begin with?
-
No, your password-protected blog should only be visible to you, or someone else who knows the password.
A couple of questions:
- Do you have other blog admins or regular subscribers or contributors?
- Can you give us a link to the blog in question, if you don’t mind?
-
Yes, i know that my question is a silly one.
Actually, i just want to make sure.
I have this protected post and i was so surprised that there’s someone who shouldn’t know the password could leave a comment on that post. When i asked, that person said yes, she can leave the comment even though she cannot read the content of the post. I know it’s not possible (i have blogged on wordpress for more than 6 years) and i think that maybe somehow she knows the password. I just want to make sure that it’s true that there is no way the readers can leave the comment without opening the post with password.
Anyway, thank you so much for the reply :)

No, i’m the only admin of my blog and i don’t have other contributors. It’s only me.
This is the address of the post https://plovea.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/rajamins-6th-birthday/
Once again, thank you so much!

As it should be, I can’t view your blog post contents.
If you would still like staff assistance, we can tag this thread for them to see and address.

@sarahcada I’ve seen spammers be able to leave comments on .org blog by somehow manipulating the URL to get the raw comment form without ever hitting the post. I wonder if it might be something along those lines.
Definitely keeping this thread subscribed :)
-
I wonder, was this a person who subscribed to the blog before it was private? Perhaps they are commenting from the new post notification email (respond to this post by replying above this line).
They won’t be able to get into the post, but the comment might get there. -
@metan1, i have followed my own blog via email and i also asked help for some of my friends who already followed my blog. I made a test password protected post, we received the email as i published that post but when we click the link to comment, it still ask for the password as it should be…
-
When I get an email from a blog I follow there is a line at the very top, above any blog looking stuff, saying ‘Respond to this post by replying above this line’.
I expect the Comment link will lead directly to the blog and keep you out, but I’m not sure that typing a reply above that line and sending it that way will go through the same mechanisms.
I am only guessing here of course! :)

People can leave comments on the attachment page for media which is within a password-protected page, without putting in the password. But they have to have the URL. In every case of which I’m aware, this happens because someone else gave them the link directly.

@metan1 is the big winner here.
I did some testing and it is possible to comment on a password protected post by e-mail if you reply to the e-mail notification of the post rather than clicking on any of the links.
That having been said, the actual post is still completely protected, the commenter can’t read anything and you have the option of deleting the comment, so while getting comments on the protected post is probably surprising, it shouldn’t cause you any lasting worry.
Does that solve the mystery for you?

@lizthefair yes, i think it does. Thanks God, my post is still safe. And thank you so much!
