Comment Management

How to block comments from individual commentators – an individual commentator has become a nuisance and we now wish to bar him from making comments; please advise how best to do this?

Hi there. Under Settings ->Discussion, look for the comment moderation section. Add the commenter’s username, email address and blog URL (if applicable) to that area, each on its own line. Despite the instructions on that screen, do not add the IP address. We don’t have unique IP addresses on WordPress.com and if you add the IP, you might end up blocking legitimate commenters as well. You’ll still be notified of his comments, but they won’t appear on the blog unless you approve them.
If you want to block him completely and not even know if he leaves a comment, add the information to the comments blacklist section. Adding him in the blacklist will send his comments to the spam folder and you’ll not get notified of them at all.
In both cases you can reverse this by removing his information from the moderation or blacklist sections.

Do not post IP addresses in the comment blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique and have not been unique for over a decade. ISPs place hundreds of us in the same IP block to save money, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. Currently only about 30% of IP addresses trace back to an individual computer. Also, note all any persistent troll would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that anyway.
