Comment notice Spam notice

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

My email had a “Comment” notice… It did not look normal…. Later, when I opened up WordPress and checked my Dashboard, there was one “Spam” notice…. It was identical to the email “Comment” notice…

Did WP accidentally send out a comment notice before realizing it was really spam? ……. Or did someone change the order in which these things are handled?

Just wondering…… Thank you for taking care of all your bloggers… Have a great day.

P.S. I just noticed that there is no opportunity on this form page to indicate that I would like to receive an email notice of your reply… I do like email notices of a reply.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, when you post through the contact form at the big question mark in your dashboard or at https://wordpress.com/help/contact you are automatically subscribed to replies to your forum posts. With the update to the forums software unfortunately we lost that box in the direct New Topic form. You can still subscribe, but from the link in the sidebar of this forum thread.

I’ve tagged this for Staff attention regarding the email notification of the spam comment on the assumption that this wasn’t a comment that you needed to manually mark as spam.

    Hi again,

After submitting my question above, the next page showed a copy of my submission — and this second page has an opportunity to ask to be notified of follow-up replies via email… Shouldn’t that be available when first submitting a question?

    Just a thought… : )
    Thank you for everything.

Yes, I explained that in my first reply. :)

Hopefully that will be corrected in a future update.

    Hi there,

If the spam comment you’re asking about is the one comment that is currently still in your spam box it does look like your intuition was correct. The comment was first cleared by Akismet then later caught as spam an hour later. That would explain why you would have received an email with the comment but then later noticed it marked as spam.

By hovering over the comment and clicking the “History” link you’ll see the following:

7 hours ago – Akismet caught this comment as spam.
8 hours ago – Akismet cleared this comment.

Let us know if you have other questions.

    justjennifer,

Yes, it would be very nice to get an update that offers email notifications to those asking questions. Thank you for requesting that from the programmers.

    Hi bdukes,

Thank you for your reply….. I’m glad it was caught as spam — and was not an error in programming that will need updating……

What a neat “trick” in hovering over the comment to get the history and all….. At first I thought it wasn’t working for me because I was imagining it would be a text box next to my cursor — but then I spotted it at the bottom…… Thank you for showing me this….. I’ll have to try it again some time. : )

I’m always glad for the help WP gives.

@96isaiah – our devs are already aware of the issue. :)

By hovering over the comment and clicking the “History” link you’ll see the following:

    @bdukes
    – just to clarify, the function to see a comment’s History is available only in the WP Admin comments dashboard or also in the My Sites dashboard? Thanks.

  • @justjennifer,

The History section has not been moved to the Calypso interface, no, as it’s something that’s likely to only be used by power users.

    Hi kokkieh,

I’m awfully clueless about what you guys are saying regarding the History section because I’m the farthest thing from being a “power user” and have no idea what the “Calypso interface” refers to……. All I know is that I was able to view the History when I hovered my cursor over the spam I received…

It was nifty that it worked for me — but based on what I imagine you are saying, did I see something that was not supposed to be available to me?

I’ll just let WordPress take care of things, since I have no idea about any of this…

Thank you all for making WordPress a safe place to post our writings to the world……. Have a great day!

    Hi 96isaiah,

There are two primary ways people manage their site on WordPress.com. The first is by logging into to WordPress.com and visiting the site from the interface which is shown by clicking “My Site(s)” in the top or by visiting https://wordpress.com/sites.

The code name for this view is “Calypso” however, it also has other names, for example, Jen called it the “My Sites” view. I personally call it the “WordPress.com interface”.

You’ve likely used this interface without knowing it, when you see the blue WordPress.com bar/logo across the top while making changes to your site you’re using this interface. While we’re constantly making changes to the interface, generally speaking, it has the humble goal of making the WordPress Admin (found by going to /wp-admin) easier and faster to use.

The second-way site owners can make changes to their site is by adding/WP-Admin to the end of their domain. We call this interface “WP-Admin”, “Classic” or Admin.

In the case of the comment history, the feature is only available in the WP-Admin view which you must be using to view your posts.

Hopefully, that helps clear things up and let us know if you still have questions.

    Hi bdukes,

My way of using WP is to go to WordPress.com > Login > see the Reader > click “My Site” > click the WP Admin link to get the Dashboard > if a spam is noted, I click it to check it and delete it……. That is where I hovered over the spam and saw the History link…….

The terminology one uses to explain things makes a difference in understanding……. We know when a lawyer uses legalese, one needs to understand it in simpler terms……. Since every specialty job has its own language, we need to make sure we understand correctly…… This world is getting more and more specialized…….

    Today’s world would baffle my parents and grandparents — it’s a bit much for me… : )

That’s why I have to say thank you to everyone at WP for keeping us on the right track in this blogosphere…… Have a great day helping others.
