Comment Order in Twenty Seventeen Theme
-
Hello,
A couple weeks ago, I switched my blog from Orvis theme to Twenty Seventeen. In Orvis, comments and comment replies on my posts were clear and easy to follow. In Twenty Seventeen, replies to comments are often shown in the same level as the original comment, and sometimes they’re not even in order, so you don’t know what the reply is referring to. Is there a way to fix this hierarchy so that individual conversations within the comments sections are more clear?

I replied to most comments on this post. As you can see, though, my responses are in line with the original comments, so it is difficult to see what is a response and what is an original comment. When it gets to a second response, though, as you can see with the conversation between Mason Kynch and theonlyanswerfororigins, then the thread is more clear.

Ah, so in this case, the difference between a top level comment and a reply is the size of the Gravatar image. Top level comments have larger Gravatars, while all replies to those have smaller images. It’s designed this way intentionally.
Likely it has to do with the narrow column for comments. Indenting too far would make it hard to have multiple nested comments without those threads becoming really narrow.
In this case, you might consider checking out a few other themes in case they handle comments with a more distinct visual hierarchy. If you decide to upgrade to WordPress.com Premium or Business later, Custom CSS can be used to adjust the look/spacing of comments on any theme.
