Comment Spam

We are using akismet on the blog and we are having alot of trouble with comment spam. I looked at the comment discussion settings to see if we could control it ourselves but we don’t want to make it so that people have to fill out an e-mail or that we have to moderate the comments (we are moderating comments already by getting rid of the spam, that would only add moderating the spam PLUS real comments). I saw the blacklist but there aren’t particular words that are in each spam, it’s either jumbled letters or fake messages. The ip addresses are always different. So – any ideas what we can do to stop the comment spam? We are getting about 30 a day for the past 5 days. Thanks!

Are you talking about spam that Akismet catches or about spam that shows up on your posts? If the latter, link to such a post please.

This is what akismet does not catch. I spammed all the comments from yesterday (shocked I didn’t get any last night I’ve been waking up to 10-15 in my inbox) but I unspammed one so you can see – it’s the last comment on this post: http://losrodriguezlife.com/2012/01/26/sick-day-smoothie/

My guess is that at first you were simply trashing such comments instead of marking them as spam, so you continue to get spam from the same sources. Keep marking them as spam and Akismet will eventually learn.

ok – we actually have been marking them as spam not trashing them but hopefully akismet will pick up on it soon. Thanks!

You’re welcome. Sorry I don’t have anything more concrete to say.

One thing I can say is that Akismet works extremely well most of the time. For instance, in my blog it’s caught around 46,000 spam comments so far, and the number of spam comments that had escaped it is less than ten.

usually it does work well for us – I didn’t know if there was a glitch or something because it was all of the sudden that we started getting spammed every 20 minutes or so without the spam being caught. We’re still getting it today but it’s slowing down so hopefully that’s a good sign…
