Comment spam blacklist not working

  • Unknown's avatar

I have the spamsite “bestoftradingsystems.com” listed in my comment blacklist, but yet I still see zillions of spamments with that in the URL. Why are these still getting through?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Garrett,

Comments that use a URL from your blacklist should automatically be marked as spam. I see that Akismet caught the following comment as spam right away:

    https://occasionallycoherent.wordpress.com/wp-admin/comment.php?action=editcomment&c=1218#akismet-status

Could you point me to an example of a comment that did not get caught by Akismet although it was on your blacklist? If you find the comment within your Comments page then click “History” after placing your mouse on top of the comment, you should get a link like the one I pasted above.

The problem is that I want them to be *rejected*. I know that the spammers use certain domains over and over again; I don’t want to see them over and over again in my spam queue. That’s what the help message for the blacklist setting suggests will happen — that comments mentioning the blacklisted domains will give an error when posted, and be discarded (automatically, not by forcing me to plow through them and hit the “empty spam” button after I’ve satisfied myself that there isn’t anything legitimate hiding in there). Akismet does a fine job identifying these particular spammers without my help; I don’t ever want to see their posts again (not even in the spam folder).

    Hi Garrett,

Could you point me to the spot where you’re reading that the blacklist rejects comments? The Comment Blacklist description reads as follows on my side:

When a comment contains any of these words in its content, name, URL, e-mail, or IP, it will be marked as spam.

So, the comments will automatically get tossed into your spam folder. They will not get rejected in a sense that the commenter will receive a pop-up notice that their comment won’t be accepted. Does that make sense?

There’s currently no way to selectively disallow certain individuals from commenting.

One option would be to enable the option to “Silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam” under Settings -> Discussion. However, you will still have some comments that sit in the spam folder rather than being auto-deleted. Comments that Akismet does catch (through regular filtering or through the blacklist) should automatically be deleted every 15 days.
