Commenter names have disappeared from WordPress blogs.

I’ve noticed that on my own WordPress blog and several others I follow, all the names of commenters in the comment section have disappeared. Instead of names, I just see the text [1] beside each comment.

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Same here, my names comes up as [1]

Hi, If commenter names have disappeared from WordPress blogs, there could be a few potential reasons and solutions to consider:

    1. Theme or Plugin Conflict:
      • Disable any recently installed themes or plugins to check if they are causing the issue. Reactivate them one by one to identify the culprit.
      • Switch to a default WordPress theme (e.g., Twenty Twenty-One) temporarily to see if the issue is theme-related.
    2. Comment Display Settings:
      • Check the WordPress Discussion Settings in the admin area under “Settings” > “Discussion”.
      • Ensure that the “Comment author must fill out name and email” option is enabled.
      • Confirm that the “Break comments into pages” option is not set to a low value, as it could cause commenter names to appear on subsequent pages.
    3. Comment Template Modification:
      • If you have made custom modifications to the comment template (comments.php file in your theme), review the code to ensure it still includes the necessary code to display commenter names.
    4. Cache and Plugin Configuration:
      • Clear any caching plugins or services you are using to ensure that you are viewing the latest version of your site.
      • Check if any cache-related plugins or services are conflicting with the comment display. Temporarily disable them to see if the issue persists.
    5. Database Integrity:
      • Verify the integrity of your WordPress database. Plugins like “WP Database Health Check” can help identify and repair any potential database issues.
    6. WordPress Version:
      • Ensure that you are running the latest version of WordPress. Update your WordPress installation if necessary.

    I hope this will works!

I have already found dozens that have the same issue. It happened a little after 9 pm Eastern. Did WP do anything? So far nothing has fixed it.

Our group of 3 blogs is having the same issue. We are using different themes, and we haven’t changed any settings or plug-ins, etc. I did notice that the names display correctly in Reader mode on the PC, and via the WP app on Android. The names display as [1] in browser mode in Chrome and Safari.
