Commenter URL option

  Dear all,

  I might be wrong, but there seems to be no way to un-select the option that commenters can leave a URL. You can only choose “commenter has to leave name and email”.

  Why not simply offer a menu for the admin to select what the commenters have to leave before they can comment, including an option for URL?

  If that exists, soory for posting it in the ideas section instead of the “stupid WP newbie not able to work out simple things” section…

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  There IS no such option at WordPress.com. There is a menu to choose what commenters have to leave, but none to eliminate the URL.

  They do not have to place anything in that URL field. It is not one that has a star*. Only username and email are required and have a star*.

  Thanks.

  Of course, they don’t have to leave a URL, it is optional.

  But why is there no such option? I had commenters that only commented to leave their URL somewhere, sometimes to very strange sites. If the URL is in the open in the comment, it is easier to monitor.

  Just set your comments to moderation then.

  I could do that, sure. But that would be a lot of work. With a URL option, I would only have to check those that do post a link somewhere in their comment.

  Anyway, I think it would be great to have that option.

  I’ve received comments with urls (to commercial sites that is unrelated to their comment). They’re not spam as the comments refer to the post, but do we have the option to delete the url from the post? Is that allowed?

  Yes it most certainly is allowed. I moderate all comments and I remove links in some cases. See 4. in my commenting policy for the links I remove > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/commenting/

  It’s a good idea IMO. On one hand, you are not legally responsible for the content in comments posted on your blog – all comments belong to their authors. On the other, everything posted on your blog affects your branding and your reputation.
