Commenting is not working!

  • Unknown's avatar

I have just begun a new blog using the Chapters theme. Two readers have contacted me saying they are unable to leave comments. I tried to post a test comment; when I hit “Post Comment”, a speech bubble appears at the top of the page saying “Please enter an email address.” However, I’m logged in as a WordPress user, and there’s no place to enter an address! The comment refuses to post. It is very frustrating to know that people want to leave comments but can’t. Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Thanks for the report! It looks like this is only happening with logged-in WordPress.com users. I’ve passed this along to our theme developers to take a look. I’ll let you know as soon as this is resolved!

Thanks Jeremey! After resetting and resetting and resetting the Discussion settings yesterday, it seemed like the problem resolved itself, but I’d like it very much if the developers could take a look to see why it happened and whether it will keep happening.

    Hi,

I’m glad you were able to get this working! I’m still unable to leave a comment on your test site. Are you able to leave a comment now when logged into WordPress.com? We’re still looking into the solution!

Jeremey: it was working last night, but no longer! How disappointing. Please help – I am paying a lot of money for this premium theme!

Jeremy: today, on my Mac at home, commenting seems to be working even when I'm logged in. Yesterday, on my PC at work, commenting did not work. Perhaps this info is helpful?

Odd that it’s working intermittently. It’s not working on my side at all at the moment. The issue will need to be fixed within the theme’s actual code which hasn’t happened yet. I’ll let you know when this is fixed and should work reliably going forward!

Jeremey: it’s now been a week since I requested assistance with this problem, and it still hasn’t been cleared up. I’m feeling quite frustrated.

I chose the Chapters theme because it is the only theme WordPress offers that is suitable for my project (serializing a novel). However, a number of readers have attempted to leave comments and have been unable; this diminishes the value of this theme considerably.

If I abandon this WordPress blog and begin posting the novel elsewhere, I risk losing the followers who have subscribed, I will have to re-send the link to a number of places that may or may not accept a second link to the same story, and in general I will lose the momentum I have built.

I paid $81 CDN for the privilege of using this theme that does not work correctly, and I am a position where simply taking the blog down and asking for a refund will inconvenience me and my readers a great deal. I would appreciate it very much if you would refund me the cost of the theme but allow me to continue using it, at least until I find an suitable way to move my novel elsewhere.

First, I apologize. I accidentally sent a few submissions through your feedback form on accident (not sure how it sent multiple) as I was testing out the comment form. You likely received several emails – sorry!

Second, I can understand your frustration with the comments on this theme. We’re working to fix it as soon as we can. This is a Premium theme from an outside seller meaning we report bugs back to them and then they push out the fix. I’ve asked for an update on the fix, and I’ll let you know as soon as I have more information.

If you would like, I’m happy to refund the theme for you and help you switch to another one. The Chapters theme appears to be the only theme affected. Would you be up for switching to a different theme?

  • Unknown's avatar

Jeremy: thanks for your response. As I mention above, the Chapters theme is the only theme, as far as I can tell, that is suitable for this project (a serialized novel). However, if there’s another theme you can recommend that has the same features (posts listed as chapters, for example) that make it conducive for serializing a book-length work, I’d be happy to consider it.

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re correct – I don’t think we have another theme that has those exact features. We could switch to a theme like Twenty Eleven until this gets resolved:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven

That way, readers could comment while this gets resolved. However, the theme wouldn’t have the chapter feel. Unfortunately, that’s really the best option until this gets resolved.

    Jeremey:

That won’t work for me, I’m afraid. If this can’t be resolved quickly, I hope you’ll consider my request to refund me the cost of the theme but allow me to continue using it until I find a suitable host elsewhere.
