commenting issues on othe blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

I was trying to comment on other bloggers posts, and I needed to select a “Comment as” and in the drop down bar I selected WordPress and entered my name as I do every day. This time I keep getting an error message that says I “You do not own that identity.” This page has popped up every time I try and post and I have made sure I’m typing my identity correctly. How can I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just got that today, too! I’ll be following this thread to see if what’s up.

That means you are trying to comment on a Blogger ie. blogspot.com blog and that software does not recognize your WordPress.COM identity. See here for an explanation and what you can do: Crazymaking Blogger Comment Settings > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/08/10/crazymaking-blogger-comment-settings/

I am getting this error on blogs where I could comment as recently as YESTERDAY. I assume some of them are Blogger, I don’t know. I have always chosen WordPress in the dropdown and entered my blog name (catonsvillecats.wordpress.com) and it always worked before. I just posted to the blog so I know I own the identity. What has changed and what can I do about it?? I am trying to comment at http://www.kittyblog.net.

I’m sorry but we are unable to provide support for any sites that are not hosted here at WordPress.COM and our support docs do not apply to your site at http://www.kittyblog.net.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support forums. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there.

Thanks for your reply timethief but I do not use wordpress.org. I am wondering why I can no longer comment on other blogs that offer me the wordpress option, without being told I don’t own my own identity. It used to work.

http://www.kittyblog.net/ is NOT hosted by WordPress.COM.
It is a WordPress.ORG software install.
kittyblog.net is hosted by Unified Layer
You pay Hostmonster to host it.
    WHOIS
    IP Address: 74.220.202.16
    Name Servers:
    ns1.hostmonster.com
    ns2.hostmonster.com

    We cannot help you here.

Same with me, I was able to comment on all of these sites yesterday, today I cannot. I have always commented on these sites, the exact same way. With the drop down bar. My blog is still active. I have done nothing differently than I usually do. I only comment on these blogs. So something must have happened today right??

Something is always happening on the internet. Try the fix TT suggested above at this link http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/08/10/crazymaking-blogger-comment-settings/ as it is the only thing that works.

    @timethief,

    fotyc said,

I have always chosen WordPress in the dropdown and entered my blog name (catonsvillecats.wordpress.com) and it always worked before.

I am trying to comment at http://www.kittyblog.net.

    Therefore
    1. fotyc has a WordPress blog named atonsvillecats.wordpress.com, and
    2. fotyc was trying to post a comment at http://www.kittyblog.net, and never claimed to own that site.

Correction: catonsvillecats.wordpress.com, blog title Catonsville Cats

  • Unknown's avatar

musicdoc1 you are right, I have a wordpress.com user id of fotyc and I have two blogs under that id, one of which is catonsvillecats.wordpress.com. I have always been able to comment at Blogger blogs by choosing WordPress in their dropdown and entering my blog name catonsvillecats (it then builds the URL right before my eyes so I know I’m doing it right).
Based on my googling, this has been going on for YEARS and WordPress just says, Hey, Blogger sucks, deal with it. Why is it that TypePad and LiveJournal and Google+ people can comment on Blogger and we can’t? I wish WordPress would at least look into this issue and take a little interest in it. I did try the fixes suggested in the linked blog post and unfortunately they did not change the problem.

To repeat and clarify: kittyblog.net is NOT MY BLOG. I have a WORDPRESS.COM BLOG and I am trying to comment on SOMEONE ELSE’S BLOG at kittyblog.net.

    @raincoaster

I don’t see any difference between what it’s saying to do, and what I have been doing this whole time. It’s telling me my blog i.d. doesn’t exist… but I still have a blog, I’m still using it, and I was able to comment the exact same way that I have been up until yesterday. Something must have changed.

This Blogger ie. blogspot issue and not a Wor4dPress.COM issue is a very long standing issue. It has has persisted for years and years.

Note also that Open ID has always failed more often than it has worked.

Bottom line: This is a well known issue. If you simply use the Name/URL option when it’s provided on the Blogger blog then your blog will be linked to your username on the comments you leave on blogspot blogs.

You can, of course, register a Blogger account and comment on Blogger blogs but your comments will not link to your WordPress.COM blog unless or until the setting I already indicated in this post http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/08/10/crazymaking-blogger-comment-settings/ is employed on the Blogger blog.

If this is a known and persistent problem for many years, why did it just catch up with my blog this week?

I’ve begun getting “you do not own that identity” when attempting to comment on blogger from alicekeysmd.wordpress.com. It used to work. Now it doesn’t. I’m logged in. I only have one blog. I’ve tried open ID and get the same error message. I’ve read and followed the directions in the suggested article with no change.

Is this a permanent broken at the wordpress end or a permanent broken at the blogger end? Is the only work-around to open a blogger blog to leave blogger comments?

Thanks. Just want to know before I make myself any crazier. No point in trying to fix a well-know and permanent mess.

    Alice

I have the exact same problem as Alice. It has always worked before on blogs I have commented before. I have a wordpress blog. I would love a work around. Thanks. Teri

  • Unknown's avatar

I also started having this problem in the past few days. I’ve had a Word Press blog for a little over a year and have never had this issue before–only in the past couple of days.

  • Unknown's avatar

I assume that’s because there was a chnage made to the software either at Blogger or here or once again it could be an OpenID issue. I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

  • Unknown's avatar

Have any of you actually gone to Blogger support and checked there for known issues and/or asked their support Staff for help with posting comments to the blog that they provide and support?
