commenting issues on othe blogs

Timethief,
Thanks for your support in this matter. I’m assuming you are a completely voluntary helper here. So an extra thanks to you.I’m glad to know there’s someone out here who can “tag” a thread so it will come to the attention of someone else who could fix something.
No. I didn’t think to go to blogger support. Since I get this same error message labeled as if from wordpress on BOTH open ID AND wordpress login on blogger sites, I guess I assumed it was an issue at the wordpress end.
Great suggestion to chase it from the blogger end of things.
All the best,
AlicePS per another comment thread in my search for help: My work around for now has been to resurrect an ancient an unused blogger account to comment from. Since it doesn’t link to me or my one and only blog on wordpress.com , I cut and paste a note explaining what I’m doing and why and leaving a link to my wordpress blog. It’s inelegant but functional.
Good luck to others with this same issue. I’m pulling for you. :-)

“You can, of course, register a Blogger account and comment on Blogger blogs but your comments will not link to your WordPress.COM blog unless or until the setting I already indicated in this post http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/08/10/crazymaking-blogger-comment-settings/ is employed on the Blogger blog. “
I’ve read and re-read this article but can’t find any way to link my new-old blogger account directly to my wordpress account.
I hate to trouble you again… but can you direct my attention more specifically to this “Setting” on blogger? I’m not a blogger user.
If not, many thank anyway for all your time and trouble. :-)

There is no way to do that. Only the Blogger blogger can change their comment settings on their blog to require only a URL and a username from commenters.
You can register a new Blogger blog (or revive an old one) which will allow you to comment on Blogger blog, but your username will not be linked to your WordPress.com blog when you do.
-
Thanks. I thought as much. And I’ve revived an ancient and un-used blogger account to use so I can leave comments. Then I cut and past my wordpress link into my comment. Perhaps this will be good enough. I didn’t want people I knew to think I was ignoring them. ;-)
All the best. Thanks for everything.

And now, I can’t post or save a draft to my own wordpress.com blog. Error message “Oops! An error occurred while saving the post.
Unknown post”Can’t help but think that it might all be related. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
This does sound frustrating! However, I’ve been testing commenting on Blogger blogs with OpenID, and I haven’t yet run into the problem that’s been described in this thread.
Could someone who’s getting this error please describe the exact steps you take to try to comment and what you see on the screen along the way? (Detailed descriptions that include the exact link to the post you’re commenting on and exactly what you click on and what you type in would help me investigate this for you.)
Once I have those details, I can see if a change on our end might be contributing to this.
@targo1 — could you please start a new forum thread about the new error you’re running into when you are writing posts on your blog? That way you can get more help with that issue but we can keep this thread focused on the commenting issue described earlier.

I appreciate all the comments and help here – I have not yet found a way around this other than to open a Blogger blog, and put a post on that blog saying “This blog really is at WordPress.com but somehow I can’t comment that way anymore.” I can easily describe what started happening late last week if it helps, rachelmcr.
I read a blog that is run under blogger/blogspot. I choose to comment. On the comment window beneath the text box where I put my text, I am presented with a list of choices to “comment as” in a “select profile” dropdown. If the blogger does not choose to allow Name/URL or Anonymous because they get spammed to death that way, then my choices include Google, LiveJournal, WordPress, AIM, TypePad, and OpenID. I have always chosen WordPress because that is where my blog is.
When I select WordPress, I get a dialog asking for ‘WordPress User Name’, and the helpful text underneath it “http://username.wordpress.com”. I have two WordPress.com blogs so I never put in my actual user id because it’s not the name of my blog. I type into the box “catonsvillecats” and as I do I can see it building the URL “http://catonsvillecats.wordpress.com” beneath the box – which is correct, that is my blog name. I click the Continue button.
Then I see “comment as:” and a dropdown, and the dropdown is populated with catonsvillecats which is the name of my blog – if I drop it down, all the other choices are still there should I wish to change my mind. I have buttons “publish” and “preview”. I always just hit ‘publish’ in the past so I hit it now. I am routed to a page at this URL:and the message says “You do not own that identity.”
I hope that is detailed enough. This began happening to me on Thursday November 20th in the morning – I read my blogs in the morning so it could have started the day before and I just did not notice.

Thanks for those details — that really helps! Can you also send me a link to one of the Blogger/Blogspot blog posts where you start out this process? Since different Blogger blogs can set up their comment options differently, it’ll help me to look at a specific blog where you’re running into this.
-
Sure. I own the blog catonsvillecats.wordpress.com, and I frequently comment at http://www.kittyblog.net and animalsheltervolunteer.blogspot.com, both of which are blogger blogs an are doing this to me. So I read an entry on either of those, attempt to comment as I described in excruciating detail above, and get told I don’t own my identity….

Thanks! I’m checking with our team to find out if something on our end is causing this issue, or if there’s something we can do to help with it. If there’s anything more I can do to help in the meantime please let me know.

(I have tried the clearing of cache and cookies already, and tried three different browsers on two different computers – not sure who posted that suggestion but sorry, it doesn’t work…)
-
FOTYC,
Yes. I, also, cleared cache and cookies and re-booted and tried three different browsers but only on one computer. I was heading to the library today to try their computer. But I’ll hold off on that for now. Thanks for providing the details of your troubles. I did not keep such precise records as you. :-) I also have set up a blogger account so I can reply to blogger accounts again. There, I posted a link to my one-and-only wordpress blog and explanation.
rachelmcr,
Thanks for you assistance in this matter. Best of luck. :-) I follow.

Yep, please don’t worry about clearing your browser cache/cookies or trying from other computers. We’re investigating it from our end and we have all the details about the issue that we need for now (thanks again for those details, fotyc!) so I’ll get you an update as soon as I know more.

Hi
I have the same kind of concern:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-does-commenting-on-blogspot-cause-the-error-you-do-not-own-that-identity?replies=21#post-2147182A few minutes after a second try, the double authentication didn’t work correctly, I could login anew without having to enter the code :s I think that there is something wrong with WordPress.com OpenID provider, when using a nickname or the full OpenID URL. It’s not a new problem:

I’ve just tested on another machine with a different operating system and I have exactly the same problem:
– Mageia Linux 4 64-bit + Mozilla Firefox 24.2
– Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit + Mozilla Firefox 33.1 -
I have exactly the same problem since friday last week. When I try to write a comment with my WordPress.com account I get a “You do not own that identity” error.
-
I have found no workaround yet and as the “account recovery” feature is a bit broken in Stackoverflow, I can no longer login or use my email address instead of my WordPress.com account until you fix this bug :(

Hi gouessej and abnehmenaberwie2014, I’m sorry for the trouble this is causing you. Our team is aware of the issue and as soon as I have any updates about it I will let you know.
