Comment/Like Notification not turning off after viewing. Frustrating!
-
The comment/like notification in the upper right corner will not stop notifying me that I got a comment/like. The last one I got was 7 hours ago at the time of this posting, I have clicked on it over a dozen times and it still reappears. Is there any way to make it shut off after one click or time out quickly? Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is most likely an issue with your browser caching. Try clearing your browser cache and see if that helps.

On second thought, that did not do it. It is still coming back. I cleared cookies and cache (not knowing if that actually helped or not). The notification is still alerting me that I got a comment. Sometimes it disappears on its own, other times I have to make it go away. This is really annoying!

Hmm. I’ve flagged this thread for Staff assistance so they can take a look and see if there’s something else causing this to happen.
Please subscribe to this thread if you haven’t already, and be patient while waiting for a staff member to assist you.

Your responses to what follows may be helpful for Staff. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com?
If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.
Note: If you are using an IE9 browser in compatibility mode to disable it see > http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html
If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please do these:
(1) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654(3) Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
(4) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questionsIf you are not successful let us know exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/ and also post any error reports you get.

It seems to me that the notification is active per page. So if you’re on a particular blog post, you see it. You click on it and see whatever notification it was, and then it goes away. But on the main blog page, you see it again. That’s because it’s a different page. Turning it off only turns it off for a particular page.

I ran through the list of things and the notification is still notifying. I am running Firefox 22.0
Thanks for the help!

Hi bubbasuess,
We have received other reports about this issue, but we haven’t been able to reproduce it consistently, which makes it a hard one to track down. I’d like to check a few things to start with:
When a comment/like appears in your notification list, it will be marked as unread with a blue dot next to it, like this: http://cl.ly/image/1W0l1P3A3q3V
When you click on the notification itself, more detail will pop up and the notification will be marked as read, like this: http://cl.ly/image/0w1f0N2C1C0W
This makes the blue dot next to the notification go away, and it should make the notification icon in the admin bar stop notifying you of new, unread comment/like notifications. If all of the notifications in the list are marked as read and you’re still having this issue, can you give me a few more details:
- Do you have more than one browser tab or window open with a WordPress.com site on it?
- When you open the list of notifications and then close it, does the notification alert pop up again? Or does it only pop up again when you navigate to another page?
- If you navigate to another page, are you opening that page in the same browser tab or in a new tab/window?
- If you wait for a few seconds after the notification alert pops up, does the notification alert go away or does it persist?
That information will help us investigate this further. Thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me. I had forgotten about the blue dots because I usually don’t let things sit for too long before clicking on them. I went back through all of my notifications and there were some from back in March and February that still had them. I clicked on all of those and the notification has finally stopped appearing. That seems to have done the trick. Now, this problem has not been ongoing since March. It has only gotten worse in the last week, so something is still up, and I don’t know if that changes the set of questions that need to be asked, or even if it matters at this point.
Either way, thank you for your help!

Great, I’m glad that worked for you! It’s possible that a recent update to our notification system made these old, unread notifications trigger the alert again. In that case, you should be all set. If the problem comes up again, please let me know and we can investigate it further. :)

Ok, the notification is acting up again. Obviously, this time there are no old alerts setting it off. I got a comment a few hours ago this morning and, clicked on the notification, read the comment and now it lights up every time I navigate to any of the pages on my site. It turns itself off after a little while, but it always comes back, whether I click the alert again or not.

Thanks for letting me know about this. Since the problem came back, can you answer these questions for me:
- Do you have more than one browser tab or window open with a WordPress.com site on it?
- When you open the list of notifications and then close it, does the notification alert pop up again right away? Or does it only pop up again when you navigate to another page?
- If you navigate to another page, are you opening that page in the same browser tab or in a new tab/window?
- If you wait for a few seconds after the notification alert pops up (without clicking on it), does the notification alert go away or does it persist?
Thanks!
