I have a quick question. I am not sure whether to approve or deny or what to do with this situation. When I publish a post and have as one of my tags Virginia Tech, the University includes me on there website as a blog to read. I will paste that below. I receive the below as a comment and I do not know what to do with the comment because it is not really a comment. Any suggestions on the action I should take: approve, delete, ect.?

It’s what’s known as a trackback. It just shows up on your blog showing your visitors that another site linked to your article. In this case it’s cool and I would approve it if it’s legit. Spammers use trackbacks though and you should always check to see if the other site is actually talking about your article in some way. Sometimes it can be a scraper who has just copied the content of your post and is trying to get you to give them a link back to your site.
Hope this helps,

Hi Dr. Mike,
When I click on the Virginia Tech’s link in the track back it takes me to their site with a University Update. Do you think in general I should delete track backs that show up in my comment section? Would that be the safest procedure to follow Dr. Mike?Thank you for your time and kindness.

I don’t delete them unless they’re from spam blogs. That blog has advertising, but I wouldn’t call it a spam blog, so I’d leave it.

Hi Raincoaster. Does that mean that I should accept that track back as a comment, and click approve?

I’m going to change my mind. I’m going to call it a scraper that’s just picking up tags from the net. When you look at the main site, there’s nothing there but adsense adverts with lots of subjects, only a few of them related.

If you’ve deleted the trackbacks, you don’t need to do anything else. As we’ve discussed before, you cannot prevent other people from linking to you. You cannot control other people’s webspace. But those links DO help your standings in Google and Technorati, so as long as you delete the trackback comments, you should be fine. They cannot hurt you or your site in any way whatsoever.
