  How many characters fit in the comment field?

  I am not aware of a character limit or a word limit.

  One would hope that commenters provide only brief and on topic comments but I have received some I refused to approve because they were post length (over 250 words or longer), they rambled of topic ans were self-agrandizing in nature. In those cases I emailed the submitter and asked them to submit a brief summarized comment to replace the initial one. As the two commenters who were grandstanders who wanted to use my blog post comments as a platform for securing followers they both refused to comply.
  Too bad – so sad. Ha! ;)

  As far as I know there’s no limit. If your comment stretches to be quite long, though, you may want to consider writing a separate blog post on your own site rather than posting it as a comment.
