I thought I’d like to have my posts along with their feature photos right on my home page. Whatcha think of that and how would I do that.

We can move your posts to your front page. Instead of choosing the option that says static front page, go back to the one that says Front page displays your latest posts. Your theme has some different options for how the front page can be set up, so once you get the posts on the front page, you can play with those options. Here’s the extra info on how your theme options work:
    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/broadsheet/support/

Also it has me hitting publish pretty soon long before I’ve set up a header photo or anything else. I don’t want it half assed presented until I have it the way I want it.

You should also have options that let you “save draft” rather than publish If you click that button instead, you can save your work without publishing.

I’m hopelessly flummoxed. I did manage to make some sort of page by customizing and having my posts appear on my leebythesea opening page. But when I go to pages to edit it, I only have one page, about. I think I may have two about pages one customize to almost what I want the other what it was.

I’m sorry to be such an addled practitioner but I guess this stuff is always a problem to me. If I just get it set up I can struggle along as I have for a year. But this transition is awful.

Thank you so much for your infinite patience. No one here to assist me.

    HELP.

But when I go to pages to edit it, I only have one page, about.

I can see why that would be confusing :) Your posts page works differently than your other pages. You won’t be able to edit it the way you do about page.

The good news is you can make some changes to how the page is displayed from your customizer.

If you let me know how you want it to be different, I can help you figure out how to make the changes (or tell you that what you want won’t work).

So my post page is now my home page? That’s good. I think. It doesn’t have a name though like home page.

I’d like to have my brand, Lee by the Sea included into the photo, maybe in the sand of the beach and clouds shot that’s there now. I could do that by using text on the photo in Photoshop then replace the one that’s there now. (I guess that’s called the featured photo?) But can I do it like I did on Wherethesundontshine blog?

Also, under the beach photo and before the list of posts I’d like to have a short intro paragraph, Welcome to the blog of Leebythesea….. etc.

At the end of that paragraph I’d suggest viewers click on About if they want more info on me. I’ll be editing that soon too.

Thanks for the prompt response. I think you must be on the suicide watch line for me now, huh : )

It doesn’t have a name though like home page.

That’s pretty common, but if you are missing the page, we can fake it with a link in your menu.

Actually, that’s your header. Featured content works a little differently.

But can I do it like I did on Wherethesundontshine blog?

Not really. This theme puts your title above the photo rather than on top of it.

Also, under the beach photo and before the list of posts I’d like to have a short intro paragraph, Welcome to the blog of Leebythesea….. etc.

Their isn’t a direct way to do this but we have options that might work for you. First, you could write an into post and make it sticky. That would keep it on the top of your list of posts all the time.

The other option is to add an welcome message as a widget to sidebar between your search bar and recent posts.

Also, don’t worry about asking a lot of questions. I’m happy to help and glad you are jumping into blogging with both feet!

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, maybe I should try the welcome message as widget that would be between search bar and recent posts. How do I do that?

  • Unknown's avatar

You’ll add the content as a text widget. Here are the general guidelines on how that works.

Let me know it you get stuck.

My blogging class suggested my blog be more scannable, easier to scroll down. They suggest my photos be smaller and have text wrap around.

Is there a wrap around provision from WordPress?

I tried to rework my last post. You might be able to see my efforts in recent edits. But it seems that once it’s posted it’s hard for me anyway to get it to come out right, smaller photos with the existing text fitting around it properly.

One problem I had with it was: I’d line up three reduced size photos and they’d fit nicely across. But when I click view post I see only two fit nicely and one is down and to the side. Can’t I count on what I see on the edit as coming up in view post?

I’m thinking that the best way to have a more scannable post is to post the reduced size photo first then then write the text next to and under the photo, right?

Also, I see your photo when your respond to me. How can I put a photo of me in that logo. The same happens with my comment replies. I’m sure it’s easy but haven’t spotted the option yet.

Is there a wrap around provision from WordPress?

There sure is! If you open one of your existing posts in edit mode and click on one of the images you’ll see a small pencil. Click on it to open the image options. From there you can make the image smaller. It you also align it to the right or left the words will wrap around the photo.

I’m thinking that the best way to have a more scannable post is to post the reduced size photo first then then write the text next to and under the photo, right?

It’s really better to follow the instructions above so the words just flow around the post.

That’s a Gravatar, You can set yours up here:

I’m trying now to edit my entire About Page on Leebythesea.me
But it’s maddening. Every time I change the size and placement of a photo it shows in one spot on the edit and a different spot in the view page final. Also having trouble with the text placement.
Is there some way I can make a whole new page somewhere and then just replace the entire About page with the new one?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi @leebythesea11,

I think it will be easiest for us to continue working with the same About page rather than create a new one and do a switch later on. Happy to help you work through it! Can you point me to an example (just describe the picture and text) of an area that you’re having trouble with so I can take a look?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you go to my about page, that’s the one I’d like to edit. I’ve just finished a blogging course and I’ve learned my photos are too big. My blogs and my pages need to be more scannable, or scrollable.
I’d like to make them smaller and wrap the text.
I’m working on a post draft now that shows what I’m doing now and what want to do on my About page as well. You can see my post draft, I think. It doesn’t have a title yet.

  • Unknown's avatar

Awesome! I see the post you’re referring to. The preview of that post is here:

    Companions and Commitments.

It looks like the images are currently aligned left with the text wrapping around. Is this looking how you would like it to?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, that’s how I would like to do my About page. Also, how do I put captions under my photos so they will stay in place after i place them under the pic in editing. They move elsewhere.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, that’s how I would like to do my About page.

Perfect! To replace the current contents of your About page with the contents of that page, can you do the following?

    1. Start on this page:

    https://leebythesea.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=2881&action=edit

    2. Click into the Text Editor as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/3C5Z

    3. Highlight all of the content and copy it.

    4. Open this page and click over to the Text Editor (similar to step #2):

    https://leebythesea.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=1&action=edit

    5. Paste all of the content that we copied in step #3 into the Text Editor.

    6. Click “Update” on the page where we just pasted the content.

Let me know if you have any trouble!

Also, how do I put captions under my photos so they will stay in place after i place them under the pic in editing. They move elsewhere.

You can do that with the following steps:

    1. Click on an image within your post

    2. Click the pencil icon that shows up when you hover your mouse over the image as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/olHs

    3. Put your comment in the Comment box as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1aL6c

Can you give that a try?

  • Unknown's avatar

We might have a misunderstanding. When I clicked on the first link you sent me, my Companions and Commitments post opened. I suspect that going further would replace my About page contents with the C&C post’s contents, right?
What i want to do is make my About page have the FORMAT of the C&C post, smaller photos, wrap around text. That’s what I’m having trouble doing.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks for the caption info. I did it and it worked. But..
I tried to edit my home page myself just using the pen icon etc. and it was a frustrating mess.
I reached a point where there was a huge gap between a photo and text and the photo and text above. I couldn’t move the lower stuff up. It was like there was a phantom text and photo there. I had to give up and go back to the edit i had a few days ago. Maddening.

  • Unknown's avatar

I thought I may have been the one misunderstanding so I followed your instructions step by step. And as i thought, all I did was make my ABOUT page into my post on Companions and Commitments.
As i said, I only want my About page to have the format of the C&C post, not the actual post. I’m having great difficulty doing so.
But I do have the captioning down correctly.

  • Unknown's avatar

Can I just delete the entire About page and start with a fresh page that won’t have “phantom” spaces on it that I can’t fill? If I just go to pages and delete it will that solve my problem? Or will I be starting with the same “used” problem page?
