a friend just emailed to let me know she had tried to leave a comment but was unable to do so because she doesn’t have the apps the site requires. I am puzzled because my understanding is that I have set up the Comments section so that the only info required of a would-be commentator is their email address.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, Please see the Support doc at https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/ and let me know what your site’s discussion settings are.
FWIW- Looking at your site while in a private browsing window I don’t get the option to leave a comment by using only a name and email.

Hi Jennifer – Thanks for your message. I checked the discussion settings and noticed that in addition to ‘Comment author must fill out name and email’ I also have a check mark next to ‘Users must be registered and logged in to comment’. Is it possible that the second requirement is causing the problem? Like most of my friends I am not very techie literate and had a great deal of help setting up the blog. Unfortunately my helper moved on shortly after and I’ve been on my own in the virtual wilderness since then. Donna (Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. My friend had resorted to the old standby – the phone – to explain what happened.)

Hello again. Yes, uncheck that box next to “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” and save your changes.
I’m away from my computer but will check back later.

Have unchecked the box about users being registered and saved change. I’ll get my friend to try to leave her comment again and hopefully she’ll have no problems. Thanks for your advice. Donna

Hi Jennifer, just wanted to let you know my friend tried again and the comment went through! She also mentioned that there are ADS! on my blog – for something called ‘ shoeme’. Not being much of a shopper I’ve never heard of them. Not sure what to make of this. I know you can – for a fee – get rid of the ads but I’m not quite ready for that step yet. In any event, thank you so much for your help in clearing up the ‘comments’ issue. Take care, Donna

That’s a shoe sales ad and you can type the word shoeme into Google search to find that out just like I did. :)
Unless or until your purchase a Personal upgrade there will be advertising placed on your site by wordpress.COM.

Hi again Donna – You are welcome! Glad to see that the change in discussion settings fixed the issue. The reasoning behind the social media login is to verify whoever is posting the comment is who they say they are. With just name and email, no guarantee. :)
As you mentioned, and as tt explained, about the ads, you are correct. With all free sites, WordPressdotcom reserves the right to place advertising in order to keep free features free. In order to remove ads you would need to upgrade your Plan from the free site. Just so you know, ads are really shown in a limited manner. If your friend saw them now, she may not see them again for a while and logged in WordPressdotcom users won’t see ads unless the site they visit is a part of the WordAds network.
@tt thanks for the follow up. :)

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for the clarification. I’m glad to know the ads aren’t too intrusive.
