Comments

I used to have a few comments on a regular basis, not much but at least 1-2 genuine comments in 2 months. Now it is about half a year or more that comments had stopped to be coming, while the readership of my website continues to be similar or even occasionally higher than before.
Could you advise me what could be the reason? I have tested to comment myself an it arrived well. So technically it should be OK. But can anything or anyone block the possibility to add comments to my articles maybe in other countries? What are the most common reasons that comments stop?
Thank you!

Hi @mareechi, I don’t see technical issues either. It’s possible people just aren’t feeling the urge to comment.
I did noticed some of your articles have way too many tags, though, which can affect their exposure in places where folks might want to comment. Please limit tags+categories to 15 or fewer.

Thank you for your quick response!
Yes, I am aware of too many tags and I am planning a big tag reducing long ago. When I started to make websites I did not know the “golden rule” of max.15 tags. But could you please explain a bit more concretely this: “which can affect their exposure in places where folks might want to comment”? Do you mean this limit appears on my website? Because, as far as I know, my tags are set not to be published anywhere on the articles’ pages. Or did you mean some other places?
Thank you! -
When you add 15+ tags/comments, you posts likely won’t be added in yoour followers Readers, topic listings: https://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/ and at https://wordpress.com/tags/. Those are places where many people can find your site, and ultimately comment. So, I would consistently post good content while following this rule, and see if there is any increase in comments.

Thank you for explaining. This would but count for readers who are also WordPress site owners, isn’t it? In my guess (and Stats data) most of my readers are coming from other sources than WordPress Reader. I realize that the tag overload is a problem to find my site because too many tags are perceived as spam, but I do not complain about the readership, which is normal for my type of site and not much SEO. What I am surprised is that I have not received a single comment for more than half a year (apart from few spam comments).
Nevertheless I am planning to make a big tag cleaning. -

To be honest, until 1 comment about a week ago, I would have said the same about my own site, possibly even a longer time period. :)
Overall, commenting as a form of engagement does seem to be down, unless directly prompted for in posts.
Folks seem to be much more apt to use single-button engagements (Like, Share, Retweet, etc) as a form of engagement acknowledgement than to take the time to leave a comment.

You might be right. I am thinking to add such a prompt inside the articles.
And yes, commenting might also be out of fashion, and I think the culprit is that the majority of online activity is happening on mobile phones and not on computer screens nowadays. On mobiles it is always less comfortable to type longer texts than on a computer keyboard.
I hope that the disappearing comments on my site can be explained by this. Thank you for your opinion!
