Comments – about 100 have disappeared.
-
I see that about 100 of my comments have disappeared from the total on the list. How and why?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It looks like you deleted a lot of comments from your site about 4 days ago. If they were not already marked as spam then they might have been inflating your comment count.
-
That is a negative. They were historic and I did not repeat not delete them. Otherwise I would not ask. Can they be reinstated?
-
Have you been deleting comments at all? Our records show many comment deletions by your username.
There are 115 comments in your trash, are any of those the comments that you are referring to? Any of the comments in trash can be reinstated.
-
Noooo.
I repeat slowly. Noooo.
I said that they had disappeared from the total, not that I had deleted them or moved them to trash.
I said they had disappeared, not that I had sent them to trash or otherwise. These were evidence of earlier work and time – they DISAPPEARED from the total which was sitting at about 340. Now it says 250ish. Okay?
-
Back to your insightful message of 10h02. I go through my spam folder periodically to fish out the comments that should not be spam. I have been doing that ever since I discovered that you do not differentiate so well. Have a look at my figures properly. I did not delete them. These were comments that I had okay’d and answered, accumulated over MONTHS.

Hi Bruce,
Let’s see if we can track down what could have happened here and get these comments back up and running.
First, just to clarify, the comments listed here are not the ones that are missing from your site – correct?
https://bruces23.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=trash
Second, could you clarify where you’re seeing “the total which was sitting at about 340. Now it says 250ish”? Currently, I see 3,000+ approved comments on your site here:
https://bruces23.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=approved
You can see that number next to the arrows in the top right-hand corner of the page.
Lastly, do you have one or two examples of comments that have gone missing? I know this is asking for a lot, but it would really help to know even the post title where you previously had comments that aren’t there any longer.
Thanks for your help!

My so-called top contributor is a chinese source – they were up at 25 so – now look – they are down to 20 so 5 disappeared in the last two days.
-
Thanks for that additional info! I’d like to take a look at their comments specifically. Could you let me know their email address or username so I can locate their comments? Please note, the email address will appear redacted in the forums, but it will be visible to staff.
-
(email visible only to moderators and staff) is the e-mail address that was posted from – I suppose you will tell me they are spam! :)

Hi Bruce,
When I search for that commenter in your Comments section, I see 25 comments. You can see that search by clicking this link.
Here’s a screenshot of the search total:
Is that what you’re seeing on your side?

I just counted again, and I counted 25. Do you see a “Next Page” arrow at the top right-hand corner of the page as shown here?
I’m betting these are split between pages.

No _ I am afraid I am looking at my Stats page:
Other Recent Stats
Stats by other authors
and the list is sparse but I see myself at the top – as a respondent – and I have lost about 100, and the next has gone from at least 25 and now shows 15.

Hi,
The comments under the stats page is based on the previous 1000 comments. So, depending on the makeup of those last 1000 comments, the individual stats might be higher or lower.
For example (made up these numbers):
Comment Range: 0 – 1000
If you commented 400 times in this range and someone else commented 25 times. Your stats would read like this:
You – 400
User #1 – 25
Comment Range: 500-1500
Since these numbers are re-evaluated based on the previous 1000 comments, the individual stats might be a bit different. In this example, say you commented a bit less from 1000 to 1500. Also, let’s say that of your previous 400 in the other range, only 100 of them were made between the total 500 and 1000 comments. The stats would look something like this:
You – 300 (100 comments from range 500 to 1000 and 200 from range 1000 to 1500)
User #1 – 12 (Similar calculation to above)
Does that help to clarify? These comments are gone per se; they’re just not reflected in the top comments stats because those are based on a certain comment range.
If you search your actual comment pages though, you should find all of your comments. For example, the user you mention has 25 comments here:
