Comments and IP addresses

I realise this is going to be a stupid question that I probably already know the answer to, but bear with me.

If a person leaves an anonymous comment on my blog, what IP address will show up attached to their comment. Is it possible that anonymous comments will come back with my IP address?

The IP address that shows in the comments section of the dashboard will be the actual IP address from which the comment was made. Do not that some use proxy servers, and in some instances it may be that the URL show will be that of a proxy server, and not the actual URL of the commenter.

Here’s what confuses me. I have a comment on my website that has my IP address in it. It’s as though I made the comment, but I didn’t. I live alone, so this troubles me.

What kind of Internet connection do you have? If your ISP uses dynamic IP assigment it is possible to have multiple users with the same IP, depending on which time and day they log on. My IP changes several times a day.

I have att dsl. I’m not sure about dynamic or not.

I’m not US-based, so I cannot answer that. Hopefully someone else will spot this :-)

I believe my IP is static. As I notice from my own comments my IP has been the same for the last several days.

Rarely is consumer level internet service a static IP. Most people pay extra for it in the US. However, here in S. Korea, I have an IP that only seems to change when I reboot my modem. DSL for what it’s worth.

/me misses her building that was hard wired with high high speed.

Huh … well, then I don’t know what happened … maybe a wordpress glitch?

not changing your ip address does not always mean it is static. try rebooting your att.dsl router, then take note of the new ip address. chances are it will give you different ip address. unless you pay additional amount, internet service providers will not assign a static ip address in your router.

The short form is that it’s someone with the same service provider as you, but not necessarily even someone nearby. Unless your IP traces directly to your home address and/or has your name on it (some do!) it’s probably just coincidence.

raincoaster, I’ve heard of people buying IP numbers for whatever reasons or evil-doings they are planning. Could this be the case that someone bought the IP number from someone else?

It’s not necessary to buy an IP to spoof it. People pick numbers out of thin air; I know a woman who makes all her emails seem to come from Paramount Studios. Or if you commented on my blog, I could copy your IP and spoof it. It isn’t necessary to buy it. IPs are not really secret at all; any decent stat tracker will copy all IPs of everyone who looks at your blog daily.
