Comments are lost

  • Unknown's avatar

Recently I imported my posts to my wordpress blog, including all the comments. Today I edited the posts’ links to point to the right urls, based on my new blog address. After each such change, I received an email “Please moderate…” After I pressed “Approve” on two of those emails, I noticed that comments from the corresponding posts are lost. Could you please explain it? And is it possible to restore the comments? It is not critical, but would be good to know. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi dpreznik,

The new comments you were getting are pingbacks, so those are normal. I’m worried about the other comments being missing, though.

Would you be willing to make a free test site, and run the same import on that? Then, if the comments are showing there but not on your live site, please link us to the affected posts so we can dig deeper.

    Hi,

I would need detailed instructions what and how exactly I should do.

  • @dpreznik sure thing:

    1) Create a test site here: https://wordpress.com/start/ — just use free settings, a free test domain, etc. You will not need to launch this site since it’s just a test.

    2) Import the content the same way you imported before. At this point, you have two copies of the site: the live site, which you modified and which is missing comments, and the fresh import on a test site. You can delete the test site once we’ve resolved this issue.

    3) Check the fresh import test site to see if the missing comments are there.

    4) Update us with results, including the title of at least one affected post.

    Thanks in advance!

    I created a new website https://testanddeleteme.wordpress.com/
    I imported my data.
But I don’t see anything on the website, except 2 links:
TestAndDeleteMe, Create a free website or blog at WordPress.com.

  • Can you provide us with the following please?

    1) The site URL that you exported from.

    2) The site URL you imported to.

I edited the posts’ links to point to the right urls

Can you tell us more about how you attempted to do this?

    Thanks!

    1) The site I exported from does not exist anymore.
    2) https://dpreznik.wordpress.com/. And the temporary test website is https://testanddeleteme.wordpress.com/.
To edit the link, in Edit mode I pressed the link and then pushed the Edit button. Then changed the url and pressed submit. Then pressed Update.

I guess, it is not that important. We probably can just delete that test website https://testanddeleteme.wordpress.com.

I was able to find your old site biblicalresearches.com by looking at the import you made to the “test” site.

Pulling up that site in the Internet Archive and comparing a few posts between that and your two sites here at WordPress.com, it doesn’t appear that any comments were missing. The posts I compared at random all appear to have the same comments showing.

Is there something specific you’re seeing (or not seeing) from the import? By all our troubleshooting it appears that everything imported properly and your changing page links on some of your posts are triggering pingback notifications not that comments have been missing. Those pingback notifications are technically new since you’ve just recently edited those posts to use the new links.

    I hope that clarifies things!

As I mentioned, comments are missing only on the post(s) that I “approved”, and they were only one or two, so no surprise random check did not show any difference. But it is not that important, as I am not going to approve such comments. Thank you very much.

Also, could you please tell how I can delete the temporary website testanddeleteme?

  • comments are missing only on the post(s) that I “approved”, and they were only one or two, so no surprise random check did not show any difference.

If you’d like us to have another look, please post the links to the particular posts where the comments are missing both on the https://dpreznik.wordpress.com/ and the test one.

If you’d rather keep on working on your site and forget about this, then you can delete the test site as explained here:

    https://wordpress.com/ru/support/delete-site/.

Just make sure you’re on the test site before proceeding (click on Switch sites, if needed).

How can I make the check? In the test website, when I view a post, I don’t see any comments under it.
But when I check general information, my real website has 305 approved comments, and the test website only 303. This is strange, as I would expect the other way around.

  • We’d be happy to dig further into this. Please post the links to the particular posts where the comments are missing both on the https://dpreznik.wordpress.com/ and the test one.

As I mentioned, I cannot find out where the comments are missing, because they do not show up on my test website.

  • Hm, ok, without specific items to dig into, we aren’t really able to track down what’s going on. As far as we can see, everything is operating normally.

The next time it happens, would you please use https://snipboard.io/ to share some screenshots of what you’re referring to?

That will give us a lot more to go on, and the content of a rough timestamp (by way of your reply) will help too.
