Comments are shrinking
-
I’m resubmitting this because I did not receive email confirmation that you got this. Why do my comments shrink toward the end of the threads? See most recent post for examples among many throughout my blog. How can I fix this, fill them back out? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
That is because you have NESTED comments. This is what happens with nested comments when you reply too many times to one particular comment. Just change that under Settings->Discussion.
-
-
I realized it was happening with the nests. But we should be able to nest freely. Such a thing as too much ongoing feedback from dedicated readers? ^^
-
-
Then expect that the comments will get progressively narrower. Nesting is designed for blogs that get only a few reply comments.
-
Got that. But I’m still confused. What will happen to the comments already nested if I — ? What do you suggest I change exactly in the settings? The page is open…I’m ready to do what needs doing. Thanks, RC. =)
-
I disabled the nesting but now of course there is no way to see who’s commenting to whom. Is there a middle ground? Any nonproblematic way to show related comments?
-
Unfortunately, there is not. With un-nested comments it’s good to foster the convention of replying with @whoever eg
@dipumpkin that’s a good point but unfortunately there’s no middle ground.
@raincoaster ah poop!
etc
-
Huh. I don’t think many bloggers are familiar with the convention. But okee doke, Thanks again, RC.

Uh oh, concern: so if we’re just going vertically in the thread, how can I make sure the intended reader receives the comment – and not someone else? Please see my latest post “disarmed..” for what I mean. Savioni was the last to respond. Under him, I was writing kmabarrett. I don’t want to bother Savioni with the response intended for someone else. I did write kma through the small comment window on the upper right of my screen. I guess that would help? But again, it looks like Savioni could be getting my reply as it’s all laid out under my post.

4. Enable threaded (nested) comments __ levels deep- Turn on this option to allow visitors to reply to other comments inline/nested. When turned on it can allow for better discussions and responses. We suggest using a maximum of 3 levels deep. Anything higher and the theme layouts may not work as expected. Note: Enabling the setting only applies to new comments since existing comments don’t have any threading date. However, disabling this setting applies to all comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings

I set it three levels deep. Thanks, TT. I read it but I don’t believe I saw an answer: I have a lot of conversations where reader and I are going back and forth a lot. So after the third nest, the dialogue will simply continue outside the thread? Hmmm…so if it’s a long dialogue, will it build another nest of 3 levels?
The biggest concern without the nesting was that commenters who had nothing to do with a particular feedback would be bothered by a reply (if their last comment sits just on top of the reply box), the nesting no longer there to organize/route the reply.
I appreciate the help.

I have several posts with over 100 comments, and one with over 2200, and un-nested comments, and it hasn’t really bothered anyone so far.
-
Great, RC. I’d still like to know what’ll happen to the rest of the “thread” beyond the three levels I do want, where it exceeds the three.
-
@raincoaster
True but my email accounts are already overflowing. I do not ever subscribe to comments on any posts, so I don’t experience a flood of back and forth comments being emailed to me. Then again, I’m not the chatty Cathy type. I’m a taciturn introvert who finds most conversations with most people to be exhausting, annoying and completely unnecessary (no kidding). I love the sound of silence and could easily disable commenting and blog on without missing a beat. lol :D -

Try it and find out as you can change it back again if you don’t like the result.

@TT
;)
No, I wasn’t thinking of those who’d subscribed to comments. Ok, I guess it’ll be okay.

Had just wanted to know what to expect if anyone knew.
K, live and learn!
