comments box just disappeared with no changes except maybe auto-WP update

  I updated all plugins. turned plugins off. switched back to 2017 themes. nothing works. still hidden even though comments are enabled.

  After more research realized comments was working on some old posts and pages. Found the post-specific checkbox (that was hidden for some reason in screen options) and corrected. Silly mistake. Thanks,
