Comments forced into tiny columns

What is wrong with my neighbor’s blog that the comments look like this?
    http://praxisphotography.wordpress.com/2010/09/17/smile-from-the-heart/#comments

He says it looks fine on his end (I think he’s using a public computer). On my end, the comment boxes in threaded comments get so narrow after 3 comments that it won’t take even one typed letter! Has he been fiddling with codes and messed it up? Thank you.

The comment area looks ok from here as well.
Could you try clearing browser cookies / cache first?

    Solve Common Browser Issues

Did as instructed. No change. He mentioned trying to get creative with the template and adding HTML and images to the comments box. However, he’s not a techie person at all and before he did all that his blog/comments boxes were fine.

The picture comes clearer. He did say he experimented, which changed things up. His page becomes readable again only if I reduce my browers’ fonts to 12 point or less. Anything higher and his page gets all screwy.

His page is the only one that does that. I normally browse WP at 16-point fonts without any issue.

Do you have any advice I can relay to him so that I can keep my browers’ fonts at 16 point and still have his page appear normal? Thank you.

Go the the view menu on your browser and reset your browser zoom level and see if that fixes things. You might have to force refresh the page probably after making the change.

Ack! I’m finding this support not helpful.

Zooming changed nothing; ditto the previous suggestion of clearing the cache/cookies.

My browsers are not the problem. They function fine at any font size, including my set preference of 16 pt., for ALL WP blogs EXCEPT his. I’ve stated such and so far no one’s picked up on that telling clue.

He tinkered with the template or something in an attempt to get creative while lacking technical skills and rendered his site illegible across all platforms and font size.

So far I’m getting no explanation or genuine help and continue digging for answers on my own. If there’s someone who can offer more than a passing ineffective solution, I’d appreciate it.

@ally, I’ve looked now in Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Flock (don’t have IE because I don’t do Windows) and in all of those browsers it looks normal. No narrow columns in the comments.

I cannot reproduce the error in 4 browsers. If I cannot reproduce the error, I cannot even attempt to tell what is wrong.

Take a screen shot of what you are seeing and post it to your blog media library and then post back here with the link.

Again, I’m not seeing the issue in 4 browsers.

Also, what browser are you using and what version?

  • Unknown's avatar

Here is what I’m seeing, in a full-sized screen shot on all 4 browsers.

Also, I know you are frustrated, but work with us here. Provide us with a screenshot of what you are seeing, and tell us what browser and version you are using. That could help us figure out what is going on.

@ allycatadventures: You seem convinced that the problem is praxisphotography’s “tinkering”, but you’re wrong: the look of his blog is the standard look of the theme – no tinkering at all (you have misunderstood his remark that “you could put html in the comment boxes”: he simply meant he posted a clickable picture in a comment). And your browsers functioning fine “for ALL WP blogs EXCEPT his” would have been a “telling clue” only if you had checked several other wp.com blogs that run Chaos Theory and have similar threaded comments on).

So if there’s a problem with praxisphotography’s blog, it’s a problem with the theme in general, not that blog in particular. And you’re right about that. I checked the situation in my tests blog: with font size restricted to 16px minimum, threaded replies in Safari still show up as they should, but in Firefox they may wrap around the metadata of the previous comment and so become a lot narrower than normal.

@thesacredpath – The praxisphotography blogger has changed his theme. Aside from an unresponsive script, it peforms reasonably well. (This is his third theme; it was only the second one at issue that did not function properly.) Thank you for jumping in to help.

@panaghiotisadam – It wasn’t his remark about html in comment boxes, rather an admission that he’d been trying to change everything around (and joking that he wasn’t sure it was legal) that raised concern (and understandably as he isn’t techie-inclined).

As relayed to thesacredpath volunteer, he has changed his platform and aside from an unresponsive script, it functions reasonably well. I relayed your findings to the blogger for his information. Thank you for your assistance — yours and everyone’s — it is truly appreciated.

I reckon we’re all glad to put this baby to bed. :)
