Comments form woes

  • Unknown's avatar

The comments form on my site is an absolute mess. I cannot figure out how to change it to a simpler layout. An integrated block editor is also confusing to readers.

A plain comment form would be appreciated.

A suggestion would be to remove the block editor as its features are minimal and can easily be included in the formatting options, as it has been with 99% of comments and forums since the dawn of the internet. This is not the future, it’s confusing.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey @friburg, thanks for the feedback on this. I’m sharing it with our developers. Can you also share more specifics about any mess or issues you’re seeing, beyond it feeling to complicated for comments?

    Thanks in advance!

I am facing similar issues too.

Quite a few of our users complained about this today and judging on volume of comments, quite a few did not bother trying to post. Please either give us the option to have plain text comments or revert back.

This block editor is very confusing and unclean. And readers are not able to place links easily in it.

I left this comment on a similar forum post, but will add it here as feedback as well.

Technically, your site visitors can add their comment text without choosing anything. The default block in the Editor is the paragraph block. Hitting “Enter” makes a new paragraph, just like it always did. At the minimum, commenters now have the option of styling their comments a bit more

However, that “Type / to choose a block” is certainly confusing and unnecessary if you’re not familiar with the Block Editor. It’d be more communicative if it said something like “Start typing” instead.

One user posted a youtube link which did not bring up the video, instead appearing inside a box and in grey background. This user has posted links like this before so I’d say it is not quite so simple as not choosing anything.

Honestly, this type of change is completely unnecessary but if developers feel compelled to make it then it should be by user opt-in and not forced upon them by default. Try to remember that most commenters are not likely familar with markdown or editing options.

We are experiencing the same issues. Everyone hates this. Why can’t WordPress acknowledge they made a mistake in doing this and revert back. No one wants to style their comments. They want a simple way to comment. That is all. But no, it’s totally destroying the flow of conversation. If destroying the comment section of a blog was the goal, well done. You’ve outdone yourselves. It sucks.

It’s a total mess, this block rubbish. I had two WordPress sites, then the scriptkiddies, usually female, got to it. I got around it by posting one line only, using comments below to post … now they’ve made comments block too.

Typical backenders not understanding frontend in the least as user friendly.

We’ve got similar problems. It’s making for a very difficult and boring commenting and reading experience. Anyone worked out how we can get to post images, videos etc that automatically display as they used to? Help appreciated if you have.

I don’t know why anyone would think re-designing the comment box was a good idea. PLEASE go back to the way it was…this is an epic fail. For those of you who write code: most of us don’t know how to code and we have no idea how to use the “style” function, we just want to write comments or paste a link.

The site I admin is nothing without the comments so this is a big deal. Again, I have no issue with this so long as it is done as an opt-in for the end user.

The comments box we had for however many years until whoever started fiddling with it the last couple of months was fine, and behaved consistently. All these “updates” lately have been one disaster after another. Roll back to Sept ’23 and leave it alone.

  • Unknown's avatar

Exactly. We have had the same situation, same time frame. I’ve been complaining since they started with these updates. Who thought this was a good idea? After seeing all the complaints, why not admit it was wrong and revert back?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m an admin on a site that is primarily for people to chat and post information. The update to the comment box has left everyone very confused about what they’re meant to do in the comment box.

In addition, this update has completely broken the ability to post links to twitter, youtube etc. It no longer embeds video or tweets, instead it just presents a link to the external site.

Please revert the comment box back to how it was before, or at least make embeds work properly.

I hate the new comment box and would also appreciate a rollback to the way it was before.

Users on the two sites I manage – which are mostly about the comments – are completely flummoxed by this change. It’s not immediately obvious to them that they can simply begin typing (in the new tiny space), and some of the less tech-savvy ones are scared of the buttons. I think it would be less of a problem if the comment box looked its normal size and they could happily ignore the formatting options.

As someone else said, the fact that embeds do work is also a big issue.

    Embed do not work…!

@supernovia This is what I mean by an absolute mess, the same as what @mohitx7 shows in his comment. It’s big. It’s bulky. The icons are not in the correct place.

I feel like this new comments block needed to go through extensive testing first. The UI/UX does not feel like a comment; it feels like a forum post, but this platform is for blogging.

In my opinion, this new comment block should be called the ‘Advanced Comments Form’ and be a choice for the blog owner to choose between it and a simpler form. This, at least in my opinion, opens the doors to spam and much more.

There is too much going on in this form, and it needs to be taken back and rethought before publication. And please, on behalf of myself and others who also share the same view, make this new form an option for those who want such features and allow those who don’t want the new form to not have to use it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ahh, I see that the form has been fixed somewhat. But still, there is so much negative space in this new design. I don’t want to come off as abrasive, but this just feels like an amateur design that has implemented code that was harvested from the block editor. It is less than ideal, especially now that it has caused trouble for so many users.

    Again, please rethink this.
