Comments From UNVERIFIED VISITORS Are Not Appearing On My Blog. HELP!

  • Unknown's avatar

To Whom It May Concern: Some comments are still not appearing on my site. I have NOT restricted comments to registered users so any comment should go on the blog, right? All comments do get sent to my email. This is nice but I’d rather they all appear on the blog. The distinction between those that appear and those that don’t is that the latter are termed “unverified visitors” by the email WordPress sends to my in box alerting me to the comment. I have no idea how to verify a user or why a particular poster is unverified and another is verified. Here’s an example of an email I just received, telling me a comment was made. It does not appear on the blog because it’s from a cursed “unverified visitor”:

    Name: XXXX XXXXXX
    Email: YYYYYYYYY.YYY.YYY
Comment: If the Cowboys do well this year, their “no styrofoam” message may spread! :)

    Time: August 2, 2013 at 7:55 pm
    IP Address: 198.228.228.49
    Contact Form URL: http://greensportsblog.wordpress.com/2013/08/02/greensportsblog-weekend-parting-shots/
Sent by an UNVERIFIED VISITOR (my CAPS) to your site.

Thank you in advance for letting me know how to solve the unverified visitor problem. If I can’t I’m going to have to move the blog elsewhere because most of the comments are not appearing on the blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I think you are referring to feedback from the contact form on that page, not a comment.

Feedback is never posted publicly to your site and will only be sent to you as an email.

If you want people to comment, remove the contact form from that page. Put it on an “About” or “Contact” page instead.

The theme you are using, Ari, has a fixed height left sidebar which you have added a number of widgets to. This pushes down the Archives widget so that only the most recent month is showing, leaving everything else below it hidden to your visitors.

Perhaps you would like to either remove a few things from the sidebar or consider changing themes to one whose sidebar is not fixed.

I’m sorry, I didn’t notice that you had already posted the same question a week ago.

You can find your previous forum threads by clicking on your username at the top right corner of any of the forum pages, next to “Welcome, yourusernamehere.”

Hello Jennifer: THANKS SO MUCH FOR WRITING TO ME. I have to admit I am not the best written-help person in the world so thank you in advance for bearing with me.

OK, so, if I understand you correctly, if I want people to comment, I should NOT add the “ADD COMMENT FORM” at the end of each post. Is that right? If I add nothing to the post itself, people will still be able to comment? I thought that I had to add that form to allow them to comment but I guess I was wrong :). Please confirm that I have this right. Feedback–which I’m now gathering is just meant for my eyes via email–is activated by this ADD COMMENT FORM, correct? And I can add it in the About or Contact Section? Again, please bear with me.

On the “Unasked For Suggestions” (and thanks for that)…I notice that fixed sidebar. I’ll try and make the change to an un-fixed sidebar.

THANKS AGAIN!!! And your blog is way cool.

Each post and page is provided with a comment box at the end. No need to add the contact form at the end of each post or page.

Both the comment box and contact form are filtered through Akismet. Although Akismet is generally very good about recognizing spam and will put spam in the spam folder, here are some resources that you will want to read to educate yourself to recognize those spam comments that may make it into your regular comments:

THANKS AGAIN, Jennifer…You are a big help. OK, I’ve tried to poke around and figure out how to get the sidebar un-fixed. No success as yet. Any recommendations? I’ll read about spam in a bit.

    You’re welcome.

Perhaps I was unclear. You can’t “unfix” the sidebar in Ari. That is the way the theme is set up. Therefore my recommendation to either remove some widgets from the sidebar or perhaps look for another theme more suited to your needs.

Ahhhh. Now I get it. Right now, the widgets I have on there are “META” (don’t know what that does, actually–is that important?)…SEARCH, RECENT POSTS, RECENT COMMENTS, ARCHIVES, CATEGORIES, and FOLLOW BLOG. I guess Recent Posts can come off (or only the 3 most recent ones can be displayed) and Categories. And maybe Meta. Or maybe I need a theme that allows the left side to be unfixed. Will play around with it. Do you approve all comments before they appear on the blog?

Do you approve all comments before they appear on the blog?

Absolutely. We seem to be in a period where spammers are changing tactics and it is only the wise course to set your site to moderate all comments. (Sadly, a comment may sound very sincere, and the site owner so happy to have a comment that they’ll approve it. So do please read those articles I linked to.)

That’s all the time I have today to be in the forums, but if you have other questions I’m sure my fellow forum volunteers will be glad to assist.
