Comments heading displays in wrong language

My blog language is set to Polish, but the “X thoughts on [post/page title]” heading is displayed in English. There are also some other things displayed incorrectly (like “Join X other followers” in the follow blog widget and “on” in the recent comments widget), but those are minor and I can live with that. The comments heading actually sticks out.
Now, I have this impression that during my initial setup of the blog the heading was displayed in Polish. It was only last week that I noticed it was not. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, I’m not sure.
I checked a few other Polish blogs and the heading was in Polish there.
Is there a way to make it display correctly (without custom CSS upgrade)?

Note that while blog language is set to Polish, I’m using English interface, as I’m more comfortable with it. Changing interface language to Polish doesn’t seem solve anything, but could the problem be related to that?

It looks like we just don’t have translations for these strings yet. If you’d like, you can help us by adding some translations. They’ll need to be verified and approved by our translators before they’re pushed to the live sites.

I submitted translation for that string you have found.
1) Does the translation page have some search function? I don’t see a way to search for a specific string other than manually going through several thousands of entries. So far I can’t locate those strings I’m looking for either, and it’s going to take hours this way.
2) I noticed incorrect noun declension for the number of comments shown on the main page. Plural genitive case for 2-4 comments shows wrong. Is there a way to submit correction?
3) I noticed another minor language inconsistency. When in dashboard the New menu gives me options in English (Post, Page, Media, Link), while when viewing the blog, the New menu shows options in Polish. Since my interface language is set to English this seems like a bug.

It’s a little hidden. If you click on ‘filter’ at the top you’ll see a search box (Term).

Sure! Click on “Details” next to the translation. Then type your new suggestion in the box and select the “Suggest new translation” button.

Interesting. This does sound like a bug. Can you take a screenshot of which menu you’re talking about. (It can get confusing when there are so many of them :) Just upload the screenshot to your Media Library and I’ll take a look.

Is it possible that those are dependent on the theme rather than the base WordPress engine? If so, how to fix this?
2) There are several entries for “comment” or “comments” (multiple variants preceded with %, %s or %d), so I’m not sure which goes where . Some are translated properly with all three forms, but others have no plural input fields and only allow for a single translation.
None of that explains why I’m getting this:
It should be “komentarze” rather than “komentarzy” for four (and 21-24, 31-34 etc) comments. However, all current occurences of the “komentarze” form in the translation page seem correct. So I’m not sure where this “komentarzy” form actually comes from. After all the page has to retrieve this form from somewhere, unless it builds plural genitive procedurally by adding -y to one of those singular strings (which won’t result in a proper form for quite a number of words).
Eh, apparently the engine doesn’t handle complex grammar very well.
3) Here’s the menu I was talking about:

That “Obserwuj” comes up where it should say “Follow” with English interface settings. After refreshing page it goes back to English.
4) Some translations were submitted for the recent comments widget and the translation page shows them as current, but I still see “[comment author] on [post]” today on my blog. How does it update?
5) Aaand as I’m already on the topic of translation icnonsistencies, The Big Brother theme appears to have incorrect Polish typography. It seems like Polish signs are from a different font, they’re slightly larger and heavier than they should. Is it that the font used in the theme (not sure what it’s name is) simply doesn’t feature Polish signs and “borrows” some default replacements, or could it be caused by some incorrect encoding settings somewhere?

3) Oh, to be more specific specific: I got this bug after I followed and instantly unfollowed my blog. Toying around with the follow button also resulted in “obserwowanie” rather than “following” at some point, and it also went back to normal after refreshing the page.
Not a big deal, really, but a bug is a bug.
In the past, I used to blog in English for some years, so I’ve never noticed such issues with WordPress before. I’m still more comfortable with the original interface though.

#1 – It does look like the first one is related to the theme. You can find our theme translations here:

Since the Polish translation for Big Brother hasn’t reached 85% yet, we aren’t displaying the translations we do have. (85% is our threshold for display.) You can add translations for your theme here:

You’ll notice the current translation left that portion in English. Go ahead and suggest an update. :)
#2 – It does look like we’re grabbing the wrong translation there. I’ll ask the internationalization team to take a look.

#5 – Unfortunately, this has to do with the default font for the theme Big Brother. It looks like it does not support Polish as a language:

Because there is no universal font, this happens from time to time and we’re not able to fix it.

1) I’ve found this:
It’s current, but it still doesn’t display on my blog. However, it’s this particular string that used to display for a short while when I was initially setting up my blog (see my first post, seems my memory was correct after all). Now for some reason the string shows up in English instead of using it’s current translation. Might be a bug.
Either way, I suggested a shorter and simpler translation for this. It’s more consistent with the use of the noun “komentarz” on the main page (also, the noun “uwaga” that was used earlier implies criticism, so I’d rather go with a more neutral word here).
However, I’m getting a warning when trying to use %1$s for the singular form here, and it now shows as an entirely separate entry:
Did I mess something up code-wise?
Are there some important stylistic reasons for using word rather than number for this singular form, while plural forms of the string consistently use numbers?
2) This issue might also be related to the theme translation, it seems.

Ok, it’s been a while since I suggested some translations here and there. Some of those were approved, others were replaced by better translations, but all of my suggestions for the theme are still in yellow and waiting. So… who exactly approves or rejects those theme suggestions? After two weeks I have this feeling that there’s actually nobody there to check translations for The Big Brother Theme, which would complicate things a bit.
I’d appreciate some help here.
No progress with issues 2 and 3 too, but these are minor things, so whatever.
Anyway, I noticed another font issue last week, after using some post titles heavy with Polish characters. Here’s the screenshot:
There’s clearly something wrong with Ł, ł and ą here, even though ó is fine. See how they’re noticeably thinner? I think the font is Open Sans and it should feature Polish character set, but it seems like it doesn’t bold all characters properly. Any ideas?
(Well, I’d really rather stick to this theme, other than this inconsistent typography it’s very good.)

It looks like the Polish translation for the Big Brother theme is still under 85%, so the theme specific translations won’t be deployed yet. One of the other Happiness Engineers tallied things up for me and it looks like if just eleven more strings are translated, we can deploy the changes. (Of course, all 20 strings being translated would be awesome as well.)

Oh, funny you mention that today, as I was getting down to translate those remaining strings anyway. I’ve been planning to do that since a few weeks, just to see what happens if it goes over 85%. Some higher priority stuff was continually delaying me, but now I finally have some time for that. I guess I’ll handle that either today or next week.

Aaand done.
All strings either in yellow or green, including some html-heavy entries that apparently didn’t require translation. I had this impression there was more work required, but it didn’t even take that much time.
However, I wasn’t entirely sure where a few of those strings actually appear, so I had to make some guesses.
This string seems to suffer from the ‘Comments’ translation issue, it’s not possible to specify multiple plural forms.
Also, I’ve set both this one and this one to ‘off’, hoping it solves the typography issue.

And I’ve asked the internationalization team about that string. Does it need a translation for 1, 2-4, and 5+ just like ‘comments’?

Update on that string! Its actually the phrase that pops up when you hover over the post type. It will say things like “All Video posts” or “All Link posts”.
