Comments moderation, how does that work?

On comments moderation. Is that just to keep spam out? In order to not read all the comments do I just approve comments by new people and then let it go? Does having comments mean you have to check your email like five times a day to approve the new commenters?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The spam filter is completely separate from the comment moderation system. The spam filter identifies comments that are clearly spam and removes them from your comment queue automatically. If you have your spam settings set to strict the spam filter deletes spam comments completely, and you’ll never even know about them.

Sometimes spam comments do slip through and land in the main comment queue. If you have moderation enabled those will be held back for approval and then you can just mark them as spam to teach the spam filter to also filter them in future.

Important note: don’t mark legitimate comments as spam, even if the commenter is rude/abusive/getting on your nerves. Delete those comments instead, and you always have the option of blacklisting people like that so you won’t need to see their comments.

In order to not read all the comments do I just approve comments by new people and then let it go?

First off, it is good blogging etiquette to read and respond to all comments people make on your site. It’s just good manners if someone takes the time to comment on what you wrote to reply to them.

That said, there are three moderation settings: 1) You can disable moderation completely. This is not recommended as it opens the door for spammers, trolls, and other such creatures that inhabit the net.

    2) You can opt to moderate someone’s first comment and thereafter their comments will be approved automatically.

    3) You can choose to moderate every single comment. This way no comment will appear unless you approve it.

Does having comments mean you have to check your email like five times a day to approve the new commenters?

By default you will recieve an email everytime someone leaves a comment and when a comment is held for moderation, but you can opt out of those if you don’t want them. You will also receive a notification in the WordPress.com admin bar if you’re logged in.

All the options I discussed above can be changed under your blog’s discussion settings. The relevant support doc is here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

Thank you for this! You are a sweetheart. I’m going to keep that email. Okay I think I know what to do now.
Oh one more thing, how do you blacklist somebody? And is that the same as blocking somebody on Twitter? Thanks so much.

The instructions for blacklisting are in this support doc: http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

At the bottom of the discussion settings you’ll find the black list option. Just add the person’s username, email and/or URL, each in their own line. (Though the support doc also says IP address, don’t add that – IP addresses are no longer unique and all wordpress blogs share IP address, so you may end up blocking other people as well).

If someone is blacklisted they’ll still be able to read, share and link to your posts, but any comments they make will go directly to spam. Their comments won’t appear on the blog, won’t be held for moderation and you won’t get a notification that they’ve commented.

I have also had comments left on sites I moderate that were very personal and moderating comments prevents them from posting to the world

Thanks so much kokkieh! Very helpful, I think I’m set now. Thanks so much for your time and effort. And clarity. :-)

Thanks auxclass. I’m not sure what I can do if people post excessively personal stuff. After I’ve approved them the first time. But I will keep my eyes open for that.

  • You’re very welcome :)
