Comments not appearing after approval

  I know this has been raised before but no responses. I have emails notifying that a comment has been submitted. These are being submitted from an email address, not by a WordPress blogger. I ‘Approve’ the comment. The approved comments do not subsequently appear on the post. However, they are listed as ‘approved’ on the dashboard comments page. I have searched the settings page for possible reasons but can see nothing. What is going on? It’s embarrassing as viewers think I’m refusing to publish their comments which doesn’t help in getting them to take the blog seriously.
