Comments not displayed on my blog posts…

  • Unknown's avatar

I have received email notifications that 3 people have left comments on my recent blog posts, but they do not show up when I go to my blog posts. I am not receiving notifications WITHIN WordPress. Settings chosen:
(on) allow people to post on new comments
(on) enable threaded comments up to 3 layers deep
(on) break comments into pages with 50 top level comments on the last page…
(on) comments displayed with older comments on the top
(on) email me whenever someone posts a comment
(on) email me whenever a comment is held for moderation
    Before a comment appears
(off) comment must be manually approved (just turned this off…)
(off) comment author must have previously approved comment (just turned this off…)
Comment moderation and comment blacklist are left blank.

My blog is for a master’s class and I do not expect high traffic or inappropriate comments. I read a WP support page that says comments for approval are held under a ‘pending’ tab, but I do not see an option to click on ‘pending’ anywhere….

Any help or advice is appreciated! Thank you!!

Make sure your email address is correct om your account settings. There is a single email address that can be used on only one wordpress.COM username account and not on any others, regardless of how many blogs are registered under that username account.

The wordpress.COM blog’s owner can change the relevant email address on their accounts page at https://wordpress.com/me/account at any time. A confirmation email will be sent to that address.

Confirm all settings as described at https://en.support.wordpress.com/comment-notification-email/

Thank you for your reply! I have gone through the check what you mentioned, and I still do not see the problem.

I am receiving emails, so my email address is correct. However, within the email there are not links to approve, delete, or mark the comment as spam as mentioned on the help page. What do I need to do for these links to be included? That may solve my problem.

Also, are there multiple ways to allow people to comment? When writing my blog posts, I have been clicking on the + plus sign in the formatting menu bar, and then choosing “@ Add contact form.” On the right hand side menu under “more options,” the option for people to leave comments is turned on. Please let me know if I need to make changes to how I am including a contact form.

Hi there, the comment box on posts and pages is on by default. No need to add the contact form as well.

Looking at this post https://plumbweb.wordpress.com/2017/06/16/a-long-walk-to-water/ I see both the contact form in the body of the post and the comment box at the bottom of the page.

These are two different features and the results of someone leaving a contact feedback and a comment are in two different places.

When you are logged in and there is a new comment on your site, you should see an alert bell with a red/orange dot in the upper right corner of the Admin bar. If you click on it, the comment approval or review section will open on the right side of your screen and you can click on each comment to review, approve, delete or mark as spam. You can also manage your comments in the WP Admin dashboard following this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/manage-comments/

However, Feedback from a contact form appears elsewhere in your WP Admin dashboard at https://plumbweb.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=feedback

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/forms/contact-form/#feedback-management

Let us know if you’ve found the comments or need more help with this. I’d be happy to leave a test comment or you can do so yourself by logging out of your site and leaving a comment by using a different email address to the one associated with your current account.

One other thing, rereading your first post, you will want to consider re-enabling comment moderation, which you said you turned off.

    Before a comment appears
(off) comment must be manually approved (just turned this off…)
(off) comment author must have previously approved comment (just turned this off…)

Otherwise all comments (including any uncaught spam-it does happen) will automatically be published without your having seen them first.

  • Hi –

timethief and justjennifer have shared some great information here. I’m just following up since there’s a Modlook tag.

plumbc, please let me know if you need further help after reading justjennifer’s most recent replies.

Thank you justjennifer and lizkarkoski! It is very helpful to know the difference between the comments and the contact form. When I first set up my posts, I had comments enabled but others said there was nowhere to actually leave a comment. This is why I included the contact form. I just deleted the contact form from the post justjennifer referenced, and tested leaving a comment. I also briefly created a new post and left a comment. Looks like it works now!!

Now a follow-up question…is there a way to have the feedback sent to me via the ‘contact form’ actually posted publically to my blog for my professor to see?

Thank you each for your help!!! :)

  • The contact form submissions are going to get emailed to the address in the settings. That won’t be public facing.

Enabling comments on a specific page would be though. That seems like the better option for what you’re trying to do.
