Comments on an attachment that’s part of a gallery?
-
Hello,
I’m getting the hang of galleries in posts. I created a test post, uploaded a few image files via the post editing dialog, and ended up with a gallery. I inserted the gallery into the post – so far so good. The thumbnails are linked to attachment pages, not the image files. That’s what I need.
Now: when I click a thumbnail, I properly get into the attachment page. This page invites the reader to add a comment; this is what I want. However, when I click “add a comment”, nothing happens. Comment dialog does not open, nothing changes. I tried and this behavior (a bug?) does not change whether the parent post has posting disallowed or allowed.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this a known issue?
Thank you!

While preparing a test post to demonstrate the problem here, I think I found the root cause of this.
Apparently, an attachment post gets its “comments allowed/disallowed” setting from the blog default settings. So if the blog default is set to “disallow comments”, then the attachment will not allow comments.
Add this to two additional phenomena:
1. Due to a (probable) bug in the theme I used (Cutline), the “add comment” indication (and link) is there, even if comments are not allowed. It just doesn’t take you anywhere.
2. Apparently, the abobe behaviour (attachment post gets its setting from the blog default) takes place once, when the attachment is first created; when I later change the default, existing attachment posts do not change. This led me to believe that it’s not related to the default – but it is.
Can the above be confirmed by someone more WP-savvy than myself?
Also, is there a way that I can change the attributes of an attachment post, after it has been created? (for example, this comments allowed/disallowed setting).
Thanks!

Yes, the attachment pages are orphans and not very well controlled by bloggers here. They are pages we can’t directly edit. Once an image is uploaded, and if you have chosen the “post url” option, or are using a gallery, you have few options. You can add content to the page via media> library > edit > add a description which will appear as content on the page.
On the whole, what you have observed in what happens. You can not turn comments on or off independently. Most themes don’t include an automatic “next” and “previous” option for galleries ( not to mention the “post url”), and it’s difficult to add content to the pages.
