comments on new pages default settings suddenly changed

Yesterday, I noticed that comments were not allowed on my latest published page. Then I discovered that for numerous pages, drafts and published, created since November 2015, the “Allow comments” and “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page” boxes in the Discussion module of my page editors were unchecked. I don’t know why they were unchecked. They shouldn’t have been. I’ve had comments enabled on all of my posts and pages since the site was created in 2009.

The “Allow people to post comments on new articles” box at Discussion Settings is checked and has remained checked, as far as I recall, throughout the period in question.

The default settings on comments on new posts were not altered.

It’s possible that while I was running a test, at some time over the past two or three months, wrt a forum topic I was responding to, I might have unchecked the boxes on one page, and forgotten to check them again when I was done text. Would this action have affected future pages?

I have fixed the affected pages, but I would like to know what might have caused the error, and how to prevent it from happening again.

I meant to say that comments on new posts were not disabled during the period when comments on new pages were.

Hmmmm … I wonder if this is or was theme specific? Are you still using Koi? It’s a retired theme and they are retired when they no longer support all wordpress.com features. That’s why the recommendation is to switch to a newer theme.

I tagged this thread for a Staff response.

    Correction:

forgotten to check them again when I was done text.

    This should have been
“forgotten to check them again when I was done testing.”

  • Hi again @musicdoc1, we don’t know of anything that would have unchecked the settings for you. I’m guessing it happened inadvertently at some point.

I’m glad you know how to fix this on your own, but if it comes up again, can you send more details?

  • Ah I just re-read this. The default for PAGES (not posts) is always comments off unless you check otherwise. This has been built into WordPress core for a while, since folks typically don’t want comments on static pages. You can enable them per page though, or enable them in bulk.

    @ supernovia,

The default for PAGES (not posts) is always comments off unless you check otherwise.

Thanks for this information. It is certainly news to me.

This has been built into WordPress core for a while..

Even though I typically never touch these settings, I have found that all of the pages of those I’ve looked at — and I’ve got 800 published pages since 2009, so I only went back about a year — created before November 2015 had the “Allow comments” and “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page” boxes checked. The boxes were evidently checked by default up to that point.

  • The boxes were evidently checked by default up to that point.

Yeah, this was a new thing in WordPress Core in 2015. I remember a bunch of folks at my users group celebrating :)

Anyhow, from here, you’ll just want to check that box or go back and enable comments in bulk. Let me know if you need help with that!
