Comments out of order

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a WordPress.com blog and the comments settings are:

    • not to allow nested comments,
    • allow 50 comments per page, and
    • have oldest at the top.

Recently, on a post with 134 comments, a comment appeared out of order, and I can’t seem to get it in order (I have tried renewing the comment settings, unapproving and re-approving the comment).

    Any ideas please? Thanks.

  • Hi there,

Can you please provide a link to the specific comment? If you right-click on the date displayed next to the comment and select Copy Link Location, you’ll get a direct link to that comment.

    Hi

Thanks for taking an interest. But a very strange thing has happened.

    1. The comment in question is now appearing in the correct place. I guess you’ll wonder if I just made a mistake, but I didn’t, for I checked it many times, and tried several things to put it right. I’m thinking that it fixed itself up when the date moved on from the date of the comment (10th).

    2. But now something else has gone crazy. There are 134 comments, and just a day or two ago I changed the setting so that the comments appear on pages of 50 = three pages. But the links from one page to “Older Comments” or “Newer Comments” don’t work properly and I get the middle page when I ask for the latest page.

I can’t imagine these two issues are related, but any advice you can give would be appreciated, thanks.

Can you explain exactly what you mean here? There is no link on the post to jump to the first or last page of comments, only to the next one newer or older, and those are working as expected for me.

If I know exactly what it is you’re doing, I can try to replicate it, which will give me a better idea of what’s happening.

    Hi kokkieh,

You’re going to think I’m crazy, but that problem has righted itself too now. What was happening was this.

There were three pages of comments (134 at the time, in groups of 50). Pages 1 & 2 are old, and page 3 was the one I wanted to appear below the post when anyone was reading it. Page 3 can appear under the URL “postname/comment-page-3/#comments” or “postname/#comments”.

If I went to the comments pages from the dashboard, page 3 appeared, but if I went to the post by some other links (I forget which now) I went to “postname/#comments” but it was actually page 2. This also happened if I went back to 2 and 1 via “Older comments” and then forward via “Newer comments” – i.e. when it went from “postname/comment-page-2/#comments” to “postname/#comments” using “Newer comments”, it actually still showed the page 2 comments.

I know that sounds crazy, but it happened (like the comment out of date order) AT LEAST half a dozen times as I fiddled with it.

I can only think that there was some glitch that righted itself when a new day began.

I’m sorry to bother you, there is nothing needing doing now, although I’m sure you’d love to see both problems replicated so you could analyse them. Thanks for your patience.

  • There was a pretty big software update yesterday, so that could have messed with the older/newer comments links, but I’m glad to hear it’s working now.

If it happens again, please let us know :)

I was thinking I might experiment when I have time – change the number from 50 to 30, or try the same settings with another post, and see if i can get it occurring. If I do, I’ll let you know.

Could we leave this thread open and you subscribed to it so you’ll get notification straightaway if that happens?

    Thanks again.

  • Threads close automatically after a certain time, but you can always start a new one and tag it “modlook”. Just mention you had previously reported the problem, and we’ll be able to find this thread again :)
