Comments Posted Automatically by my WordPress Blog to someone else's Blog
-
A few days ago, I set up a WordPress blog. It’s quite skeletal so far. Basically, I just have several posts that link to my comments on other people’s blogs.
I sent comments to someone’s WordPress blog while logged in to my WordPress account. After awaiting moderation for a few hours, they were posted, and the blog’s owner put up a response. Everything had gone smoothly up to that point.
Later, I was editing the posts on my blog – changing titles, categories, etc. (I don’t know if that’s related to the issue, but since I don’t know what’s going on, I figured I should mention it.)
HERE’S THE ISSUE. About a day after posting to the other person’s blog, I was taking a look at it and I found something strange. There were 2 comments (after the blog owner’s comment about my post) time-stamped approximately 8 hours later than my original comment. I did not send them, but they seemed to have been sent from my account – presumably automatically generated.
Both posts (which apparently were accepted by the blog’s owner) link to my WordPress blog and include similar comments:
“Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:LikeBe the first to like this post. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Bookmark the permalink.” (in the first automatically generated post), and “Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:LikeBe the first to like this post. This entry was posted in Cultic Experiences. Bookmark the permalink.” (in the second automatically generated post). Note that the the words “Share this”, “Twitter”, etc. look like they should be on buttons, but they’re just plain text. Also note that “Uncategorized” was the original name of the category of the post on my blog before I changed it to “Cultic Experiences”.Anyway, I am thinking that there might be some setting for my WordPress blog that I need to change.
Here’s the link to the comment (one of the comments that I actually want to be there) that I posted on the other person’s blog:
http://cultconfessions.com/2012/03/14/your-marriage-school-and-school-marriages/#comment-169That comment is followed by another comment of mine, then a comment by the blog’s owner, and then come the extraneous comments.
If anyone knows anything about this issue maybe you could give me a clue about what’s going on. I don’t want to litter people’s blogs with this stuff. Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That’s easy: it’s what you call a “Pingback”. It’s because when you made this post: http://chasingbearphoenix.wordpress.com/2012/03/30/cultic-experien-3-2/ you included a link to the comment. It’s an automatically generated “comment fragment” that tells someone you linked to them. Some bloggers disable them, some enable them; it’s up to the individual blogger.

I have 3 Questions:
(a) Am I to understand that I cannot prevent “littering” other people’s blogs when I link (on my blog) to posts on their blogs?
(b) Am I correct in assuming that the “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)” setting (under “Discussion Settings”) will only affect whether or not I get notification comments on my blog?
(c) Why are these notification comments garbled? I mean “Share this:TwitterFacebookLike this:LikeBe the first to like this post.”, etc. looks like it’s supposed to be a bunch of buttons or links. What am I missing?
Thanks again.

1) that is correct. It is up to those bloggers whether or not they display pingbacks.
2) Yes
3) Because they are automated, and different themes have their meta information in different places. If you switch themes you’ll probably find the content of your pingbacks will change and include a sentence snippet. You can see that in action on my blog here:
