comments problem

I’ve received complaints from would-be commenters that their comments are “awaiting moderation” or that they get an error message saying that there are required fields to fill out, when the required fields are filled. A few comments have been posted, but not the usual number so I’m concerned others are having problems too. I have checked the settings and cannot find an issue. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Hey!
The “awaiting moderation” means the comments have entered a comment queue to await your approval. The default settings for commenting is that users have to fill out their name and email, and that authors have to have at least one approved comment before they can freely comment. You could try turning off the required fields temporarily to see if that issue still occurs (this will allow people to comment anonymously, but you could always turn it off, ask someone to try posting a comment to test it, then turn it back on after you’ve tested).
You can change the settings in the Discussion settings tab. If you want to, you can disable the post moderation entirely and allow anyone to post freely; that should solve the “moderation queue” issue; but you should be receiving emails to the admin email account informing you of comments awaiting moderation.

I did check the comment setting in the the Discussion settings tab. I have “Comment author must fill out name and e-mail” checked but I turned off the “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” setting. I have not changed those settings since before the issue came up (through earlier testing) and still some users’ comments seem to be getting through and others not.
I also have manual approval turned off so there shouldn’t be any moderation needed.
Please let me know if there’s something I’m missing.

It’s possible there are some comments awaiting moderation from before the “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” was turned off; check in your Dashboard to see if there are any Comments awaiting moderation.
Once you clear out any that may be awaiting moderation, your authors should be able to post freely.

The person who told me they received the awaiting moderation message has already commented since the “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” setting was turned off without any trouble.
I don’t see any any comments awaiting moderation.
Any other ideas?

Hmm…
Is there any pattern to comments being allowed through and posted or being denied? Are there any particular users that it always denies comments for, or is it seemingly random?

I can’t tell. Only 2 people have told me directly that they’re having trouble, but I fear that there are more.
The first reported the awaiting moderation message. Like I said, that person had already posted without incident.
The second reported: “I’ve tried to post a couple of times to this but each time I get an error message saying that I need to fill out the required fields, but I have done that.”

That’s odd that someone would get an awaiting moderation message after they posted without incident; has that person been able to post at all, or does it still say awaiting moderation when they try to post?
As for the required fields, I’m not entirely sure what would cause that to be honest. I’m still fairly new at this myself, and learning as I go.
Let me do a little digging, and I’ll get back to you shortly if I come up with anything!

Yes, the user was able to post previously and then got the moderation message. I’ve asked them to try again.
I can’t understand what would cause the required fields issue either. I asked that person to try again too.
