Comments stuck in moderation queue even though "Akismet cleared this comment"

@sa40test thanks for that helpful info!

I just checked, and all of her comments were held in moderation with both name variations. Seems to disprove the name change theory.

  • @fb2ts it shoudn’t, but we are trying to duplicate the problem. We don’t know yet why this only happens to certain people, and only on certain sites. That is one pattern we noticed, but we still haven’t been able to consistently duplicate this.

Once we can duplicate it, we should be able to find a solution.

  • Since we’ve got a few people with users whose comments don’t approve:

    – Are they using the same name from the same connection multiple times in a row?

    – Are they logged in or logged out when they comment, typically?

    – Do they have this same problem on other sites they frequent?

For FP and J on my site:

    1) They do typically use the same name from the same connection multiple times in a row. (The only exception is when we asked them to try out using their “default” names instead.)

    2) They are signed in to wordpress. (J and FP both have their own blogs through the wordpress platform. Both FP and J use a different display name for his commenting on our site than is their username. As a result, when they comment on our site, they are logged in, then click “change” to be able to change their name. However, FP and J consistently
“change” their names for commenting on our blog, and even when they comment without “changing”, they still go into automoderation.)

    3) FP has noted that he gets automoderated at a separate blog (that I believe is wordpress.org, not .com).

My users are typically NOT logged in.

We have also on occasion been mystified by replies to comments disappearing entirely. The user does not get notified that their comment is being held for moderation and the comment does not show up for moderation.

  • @sa40test if FP and J change their names, comment, get that approved, then comment again with the current name, does that go to moderation?

  • @fb2ts did that issue start at the same time as this one where people’s comments are being held regularly?

Also, in your case is it also only a handful of users or is it everyone?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @supernovia,

yep, for every test we ran with them, we tried having them comment, approving, and then commenting again under the same conditions. Every single comment goes to moderation for them.

  • @sa40test Curiouser and curiouser. Remember how we were able to get one of my comments stuck in moderation on your site? I can’t seem to duplicate that anymore.

I notice that your name *has* changed between comments. So, we had to approve 3 comments, but the 4th went in.

The first two comments were under one name, and the second two were under another name.

  • @sa40test so in my case if I keep my regular name, I can comment. If I change it from that, you have to approve. If I change it back to normal after that, you have to approve the first time, then after that it just works. Does that sound right?

  • Unknown's avatar

    supernovia,

This certainly seems to describe your commenting (we haven’t had to approve any other comments, after all.

However, this isn’t the case for FP or J.

I tried to experiment by commenting while logged in under a different name, but it actually *didn’t* send my comment to moderation. Let me try again when logged out and manually inputting my email address, etc.,

WordPress has a “moderation” e a blacklist option… maybe a “white list” should solve the problem.

It´s something specific to some users… if we could add those one to a “white list” our problem would be solved and wordpress have time to better analize the issue

  • Unknown's avatar

hmm, I am actually not able to comment as myself when logged out. WordPress asks me to confirm my identity by signing in.

I feel like a whitelist could be a good fix, if this were built into wordpress. The problem is, I don’t see wordpress making a whitelist option just to address these few cases.

  • @sa40test I also have to log in when using my WordPress.com account. Your users normally would need to, too, if they have accounts here.

  • @tetzner thanks, yeah I think normally we *do* whitelist people who have previously approved comments. Not sure why this is broken, and we’re working here on how to duplicate the problem so we can add more information to the bug report @fb2ts filed.

    supernovia,

Maybe I have to comment on someone else’s blog and try to change my name (while being logged in) there?

Because my blog accepts my comments regardless of what I put in the name blank, so it doesn’t really help provide data here.

  • I was thinking the same thing. If you’re wiling, you’d be welcome to test here:

Looks like my second comment with a name that is DIFFERENT than my profile’s display name is under moderation.

I’m going to ask FP to change his display name and then see if he can comment a couple times to see if the issue is posting with a different display name than is in your wordpress profile
