Comments, though enabled, are not consistently posting

First of all, I am a free user.

As my title suggests my readers are struggling to post comments. Some of them are accepted – by and large by other WordPress users – but most are not. It was brought to my attention again this morning by a fellow blogger.

I have disabled and enabled comments. Made it so they have to be manually approved, then not manually approved. Turned off all the spam filters, turned them back on again.

I have tried varying combinations of the settings to no avail. I cannot get it so that comments
    consistently
code. I had three people able to post in a row on my latest blog and two people who could not. All but one of those people tried to post on Fiction Friday Week 28. The last, on The Eyes Have It.

They get “Sorry this comment could not be posted.” One of those two people got to my blog from a comment I made on their blog (this one tried for The Eyes Have It) and one of them is a follower who clicked through email.

The directions that have been posted on other submissions like mine are not helpful, at least in this instance. The comments are not posting consistently. I know the steps to enable comments and have followed them. :)

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

    Catherine

    Hi Catherine,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble your readers are having. To best troubleshoot this issue, I’ll need more details from the people who are having trouble commenting. If those commenters have WordPress.com accounts, they can reply directly to this forum thread and I can talk through it with them directly. (That way you don’t have to relay everything back and forth.)

Here are some of the details that will help me investigate the issue:

    1. Do the people who have trouble commenting have WordPress.com accounts, or not? If they have WordPress.com accounts, what are their usernames?
    2. When they try to comment, are those people with WordPress.com accounts already logged in to their accounts, before they try to comment?
    3. Are they trying to comment directly on your post while viewing your site, or are they commenting from somewhere else (for example, from the Reader or from their notifications drop-down in the admin bar)?
    4. What is their internet service provider (ISP)? (Some ISPs do things that can cause problems for commenting — a good way for them to check if that’s happening is to try commenting from another location, like a coffee shop or library, that uses a different ISP.)

    Thanks!
