Comments Threading as Replies by Accident

This might be hard to diagnose because I haven’t seen how it happened myself, but a couple of readers on my blog are saying that their comments are threading as a reply to someone else when they hadn’t wanted it to. An example is here (https://carnationscans.wordpress.com/2021/01/10/ill-become-a-villainess-that-will-go-down-in-history-ch-100/). Serenity mentions it. This is at least the third complaint that I’ve received within the past week. And prior to this, I talked the details through with another reader to make sure they weren’t accidentally hitting the “reply” button on someone else’s comment, so it doesn’t appear to be user error. Is there any way that I can get this fixed? Or is it possible that my comments settings are causing problems?

  • Hi there,

This is not something we’ve had reported to us by other site owners, and (as you would guess) a little difficult for us to look into if we can’t spot it in action.

With this in mind I have added a comment to your recent post here to see what happens to it when it is approved.

If you approve my comment (from Jerry B) does it appear at the bottom of all comments? Or does it appear to be threaded into an existing reply? Thanks for the additional info!

    Hi Jerry,

I just checked and it seems your comment became a top level comment like it should. Like I said, it doesn’t happen all the time, and I tried to recreate it myself, but it hasn’t worked. I just know I’ve had a couple of complaints now from more than just one person. And one of the people is someone who comments all the time, so I would assume that wasn’t user error.

  • so I would assume that wasn’t user error.

I understand why you feel this way, but user error is the most likely explanation here.

One possibility: do any of the visitors reporting this subscribe to email notifications for comments on your posts? If they reach the post via the link in such an email, it would take them directly to the specific comment, and the reply box that appears would be to reply to that comment. They’d need to scroll back up to the post itself and specifically click the Reply button there to leave a new top-level comment on the post.

do any of the visitors reporting this subscribe to email notifications for comments on your posts?

I definitely can’t say that’s impossible. But I still find it unlikely because this problem usually occurs on the first comment they leave on the post. I would think they wouldn’t start following the comments section until after they’ve already left a comment, but there is a chance that’s what happened.

  • Hello there,

Based on what’s been described there, I would suspect that the replies have come via a link on an email.

I can see their comment is nested underneath the previous reply:

I’ll Become a Villainess That Will Go Down in History Ch. 100

Which is generally what tends to happen with replies.

Then, I’ll see if I can confirm if that’s the problem. If I come across any new information, I’ll make sure to post it here.

    Thanks for the help!
