Suddenly wordpress won’t show or email unread comments for moderation
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
What if the emails are not getting through?
If you’re not receiving notification emails:
First check to make sure you are the author of the post.
Check the Discussion Settings page to make sure email notifications are activated.
Check the Notifications page to be sure you haven’t blocked all emails from WordPress.com.
Check the spam folder in your email program to make sure the messages were not sent there by mistake. This quote was taken from the following support page:

The following quote was taken from the link below:
The instructions from this guide are referring to the WP Admin dashboard. You can get to this dashboard by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s url (e.g.: example.wordpress.com/wp-admin)

Hope this is helpful!

Thank you @tifanne83..
@lifeworklarry I’ve just confirmed our server sent a comment moderation email earlier today, and your mail host accepted the email (it didn’t bounce back to us). If you aren’t seeing that email, can you check in with your mail provider to see if it went to a spam folder?
-
Thank you to tifanne83 & supernovia,
It is none of the obvious things, like notifications toggled on or off or spam filters. I think it is an internal wordpress glitch, which I can do nothing about.
When at the dashboard and clicking the upper right ‘bell’, then the ‘unread’ tab, the software simply stalls out trying to connect to server. Before, I would either see “You’re all caught up!” or a list of comments to moderate. I’ve tried on different platforms and different internet providers, always the same. I’m concerned that there are many comments I am not seeing lost somewhere…Thank you for your help- it is a socially critical blog particularly for the Papua New Guinean people.
-
@lifeworklarry The email was sent and accepted by your mail server, so it’s not a glitch we can fix on our end.
You might consider trying a different email address.
-
Thanks for your ideas. I’m receiving emails sent to my email server (gmail) without issue, but the problem still appears within the functioning of the wordpress dashboard.
Why would the particular notifications tab marked ‘unread’ suddenly cease to function as before, whereas other functions work fine? The same now occurs whatever platform I use to log in. That is why I think the glitch is somewhere within the wordpress software running the admin functions of this blog.
-
Try this in gmail’s search bar:
in:all Please moderateAlso, please ensure you don’t have any filters set up that automatically permanently delete mail.
-
Checked the above search, no new results; no gmail filters have been set up since the blog was begun. Spam folders and the like have been checked as well.
-

Old filters could be affecting things, so please take a look at them anyway. Again, I can confirm the emails were sent.
-
I have checked all gmail filters, but I still cannot understand why the wordpress dashboard should suddenly change in behavior on or around August 8th. I can't see a way to attach a screenshot, but again when clicking on the 'unread' tab, all I see now is a spinning comet for a few seconds, then a blank. Previously I would either see the new yet-to-be-moderated comments, or else the message “You're all caught up!”. Now there is neither- it just seems to stall out.
-
@lifeworklarry my apologies! I somehow thought you were talking mainly about comment notifications in email.
If you’re getting spinny things in the notifications icon, can you try another browser to see whether you have the same issue there? This is almost always a browser setting or plugin conflict.
-
You’re right on the “spinny things”- that is in Chrome, which worked fine before and there have been no browser setting changes or new plugins added. Again, tried on 4 or 5 different platforms.
Safari also worked fine before. Now, in Safari none of the tabs in notifications respond at all- not even spinning comets. -
@lifeworklarry do you mind if I try testing as you on my end? I would need to click on a notification for testing, which would mark it as read, so let me know first if that’s okay.
-
-
Okay. I did some testing. I saw a comment that was a test and was able to click on it. I was able to click on some of the older, previously viewed comments as well. I noticed they were all super long though (almost blog post sized). I’ve never seen comments that large get loaded up in the notifications panel. I’m wondering whether that’s a factor. Did this issue start about the same time you started getting longer comments?
Also did that shorter comment at the top load for you?
-
Hi supernovia,
So it might be a factor of the total number of comments plus the length of the longer ones. Is there a designated limit on that with wordpress? Do you have any way of knowing if there are other comments lost somewhere? It was strange that all comments suddenly ceased about August 8th, when I had every reason to believe they would be on the increase.
I asked several people to post test comments. The test you saw showed up in my “comments” pane and as a wordpress email to “please moderate”, but did not show up in the “unread” pane. Other tests did not show up at all. I still get the spinning comets, or nothing at all, when checking the “unread” pane.
Thanks for all of your efforts in working through this- it is much appreciated.

On the notifications panel? I’d never thought about it but will need to check. I would imagine they should be truncating at some point.

Notifications are separate from comments. You can manage all of your comments through wp-admin: http://lifeworklarry.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php
You’ll see comments management in Calypso (our new blue dashboard) <a href=”
https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/projects/32″>soon, too. -
