Commercial use of WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I would like to use WordPress.com to promote my books and associated spin-off products and events [not affiliate marketing – just my own products].

My Google research suggests that WordPress.com forbids commercial use – but I’ve found many, many sites that are promoting their own products and services using WordPress.com

I would be very grateful someone could clarify the real situation.

    many thanks

    Leo Hawkins

Please send all details of the other blogs and their locations along with good details of what you propose. It will then be dealt with.

The fact that rules exist sort of implies that infractions exist as well.

But staff have said that authors can use their blogs to sell their books, as long as the blogs are real blogs and not just BUY MY STUFF sites.

    Thanks for these responses

What I propose to use the blog for:

1 A genuine interactive support service that my readers can use to deepen their understanding of the material I write about. I want to be able to respond to their questions and help them put the material in my books into practice.

2 A way of letting my readers know about the support products and services I offer, all of which are linked to my books. For example mp3 meditations, mentoring, and public events. I mean “letting people know”, not heavy selling. I would only be offering my material, not advertising other peoples. products or services.

3 Definitely not a BUY MY STUFF project. I hate those sites as much as you do. This will be a genuine help and resource.

4 I could direct you to the website for my book that I want to link the blog to – but I see that URLs are removed. Stil, you can find it by Googling for “Break Out of Your Mind”.

The other sites using WordPress.com for light commercial use I found Googling: “can I sell my own products using wordpress.com” and “can I sell my own book using wordpress.com” plus some variations on those search terms.

I particularly notice http://beyondthebooks.wordpress.com/. This is the closest I’ve found to the blog I envisiage. There are ads down the right sidebar, so could you tell me if this level of commercial activity is ok?

    many thanks

Be sure you send this to Support as well.
We, in the forums, are your fellow bloggers volunteering technical help. Staff sometimes drops in, but to be sure they get your message send directly to them.

PS. Just to be really clear on this – I am not talking about putting up Google ads or links to affiliate products in any way.

    ciao

Thanks Itess – I tried that first but the WordPress.com support department are away until Mid-Oct. No support team, and I need to make a decision, so I thought on the forum.

I believe they are monitoring for urgent requests for help. Whether or not they would consider your question urgent or not, who knows?

Thanks for the tip – I’ll try them.

Please do not cite other blogs as “evidence” of anything.

As I said above, send it to Support. No answer will be given here.

Mark – from your previous message I understood that you wanted me to supply full details.

These are your exact words: “Please send all details of the other blogs and their locations along with good details of what you propose.”

This is what I did, ie, I complied with your request to send details of the other blogs I have found. I then sent you very full details of my proposal, again following your request. You did not say “Send this information to Support”.

I am completely new to blogging and to WordPress and have come here asking for help.

You now say, send my question to Support – but how can I send it to Support when Support are not accepting emails?
