If you register a domain on a free WordPress.com site, the domain will be activated, but it will redirect to your WordPress.com address. That’s because a WordPress.com plan is needed to set a domain as the primary address.
If you mainly want a domain, we recommend the WordPress.com Personal plan, which is a great starting point that gives you the ability to set your domain as primary and removes ads. If you upgrade to the yearly plan, you also get a free domain for the first year.
